Get Self-Motivated at Work!

Self-motivation is very important in the workplace as your employer or manager cannot be expected to keep you motivated at all times. You may even see job ads that require a person to be self-motivated or self-directed or a self-starter, and pushing yourself rather than waiting for others to push you is part of handling a grownup job of any sort.

You may not feel very motivated at work because your job is tedious and boring or because you don?t feel there?s much of a chance for advancement. You may not be paid too much for your work which also defeats any motivation you may have. All of these are valid considerations, but not being motivated may also cost you your job! You may not like the job you have and may not be paid too much for your work, but if you don?t have another job lined up it?s best to work as hard as you can so your employer doesn?t fire you.

To get self-motivated at work, first consider your work and find what enjoyment you can. If you work on an assembly line or do repetitive work over and over, make it a contest with yourself to see how many tasks you can accomplish in a certain time and then try to beat your own record. If you need to make presentations or sales pitches to customers and clients and find this dull, pretend you?re an actress playing the part of a salesperson and give the performance of a lifetime!

You might also look at the big picture when it comes to your job and your employer. Your job may not seem very important but your company needs someone to answer the phones courteously or to prepare food in a kitchen quickly or do whatever it is you do so that they can stay in business. Your boss is counting on you to complete certain tasks within a certain time period so that products can be made or paperwork be found, or whatever else is needed for their company to run efficiently.

Another way to be self-motivated is to remind yourself that you may actually be in line for a raise or promotion, if you apply yourself. When a position becomes open, your employer will choose someone that does a good job for them and that works hard, not someone that slacks off or does only the bare necessities. When it comes time for a pay increase, your boss may also be less motivated to pay you what you?re worth if you don?t do the best job possible.

It?s vital that you be self-motivated no matter your job. It?s obviously important or your boss wouldn?t have hired you, so do the best you can and take the initiative as much as possible. This will help your boss and help you as well.
