Lebanon govt launches online job search engineLebanon - Zawya

26 January 2013

BEIRUT: Lebanon?s state-run National Employment Office launched an online job matching service Friday, connecting job seekers and employers, free of charge.

The service, named Electronic Labor Exchange, will aim at reducing the cost of labor market information and enhance opportunities to link appropriate candidates to relevant jobs, the International Labor Organization said in an emailed statement.

The website is the product of a four-year collaboration between the ILO, the NEO, with funding provided by the Canadian International Development Agency.

?The NEO website offers a secure and easy way to search for work. Users can log in 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It makes job search and job posting easier and more efficient,? NEO Director General Jean Abi Fadel said.

The website will also offer informational material on job search techniques and labor market trends, the statement said.

Canada?s Ambassador to Lebanon, Hilary Childs-Adams, noted that this represents ?a major policy change and a step forward for Lebanon?s labor market and workforce.?

The ILO works with the NEO to enhance its institutional capacity to deliver employment services, to improve the connectivity of municipalities, employers and job seekers to a general network of employment related information, the statement said.

?We face a major challenge in the Arab region to create and sustain decent jobs: those that add value, reflect skills, include social protection and enshrine social dialogue. Lebanon is no exception,? said Nada al-Nashif, ILO?s regional director for the Arab States.

?We must strengthen existing labor market programs, introduce new ones and continue to enhance the capacity of National Employment Office to deliver on its mandate,? Nashif added.

The electronic labor exchange can be accessed via the homepage of the NEO?s website www.neo.gov.lb in Arabic, French and English.

Muhammad H. Zaman: Talk Is Cheap: Solving Global Mental Health ...

Click here to read an original op-ed from the TED speaker who inspired this post and watch the TEDTalk below.

Despite growing up in Pakistan, I knew who Marty McFly was. He was my nerdy hero in Back to the Future. For me, Michael J. Fox represented all that was cool and exciting about science and invention. Years later, when I discovered Michael's battles with Parkinson's, I was devastated. I did not know much about Parkinson's except that it had also affected the hero of my parents and my elder siblings, Muhammad Ali. As I read more I realized that it is something that we do not fully understand, something elusive, unclear and messy. I had always wished that someone would come up with a solution that is befitting of Marty's character, something cool, simple and brilliantly imaginative. Max Little's solution, as he discusses in the TEDTalk, will hopefully take us back to the future without the burden of Parkinson's.

Parkinson's disease just does not affect Michael, Muhammad Ali and our favorite celebrities and heroes. It affects people all around us, all over the world. Over 6.5 million men and women worldwide are affected in countries rich and poor. In poor countries, the burden of mental health diseases is particularly profound and painful. The problems of diagnosis and management are already much worse than the developed world, but fatalism, stigma and taboo around mental disorders make these diseases even more difficult for the patients, families and caregivers. There is a dire and an urgent need for simple, robust and easy to manage solutions to diagnose, manage and cure Parkinson's. We desperately need a solution that is cheap and uses the resource available to all, not just to those who are privileged and live in rich countries.

What Max is trying to accomplish for Parkinson's is exciting for me on so many levels. First, he is working on a problem that is truly global and not just a problem of a select few. Second, he is addressing a messy and complex problem, that comes with not only biological complexity but also social stigma and societal challenges for the patient and the caregivers. But for me, the best part is that he is using a solution that is simple, easily accessible and cheap. There is no question that mobile phones have transformed the way we live, but it is the ability to use the same phone call for the global good, that is the most inspirational part. Using a simple phone call to help not just yourself but others with similar difficulties in countries you have never heard of is not only a highly creative solution, it is also the right way to think about global mental health. It is a powerful reminder that we are all in it together. The approach is also inspirational for all those who see difficult health problems in their homes and villages, want to do something about them, but get discouraged by the lack of material resources. For me, Max provides them an inspiration to think big, to combine the most common of tools with the most precious of resources, creativity and imagination. I hope that this mobile phone based approach will not only aid in the discovery of Parkinson's biomarkers but some day, a Max Little in Boston or a nurse in Bhutan, an engineer in Bolivia or an ordinary citizen in Botswana will use ingenuity, creativity and imagination to come up with a comprehensive cure of this and many other diseases.

McDonough no stranger to Obama inner circle

(AP) ? In selecting Denis McDonough to be his next and fifth chief of staff, President Barack Obama is tapping a longtime confidant and unflappable ally to be his gatekeeper to the personalities and challenges that will confront him in his second term.

Obama announced Friday that McDonough, now one of the president's closest national security advisers, will replace outgoing White House chief of staff Jack Lew, whom Obama has nominated for the treasury secretary.

McDonough, 43, becomes the latest link in a chain of staffers elevated to key roles in the Obama White House following years of service within the president's closely guarded inner circle. The risk-averse strategy keeps Obama in his comfort zone and ensures that those setting the tone for the administration are in tight harmony with his way of thinking.

"The president trusts him ? perhaps more than anyone else in the White House. And I think he knows the president's mind perhaps better than anyone else in the White House," said John Podesta, who served as President Bill Clinton's chief of staff and co-chaired Obama's transition team. Podesta worked closely with McDonough both in former Sen. Tom Daschle's office and at the Center for American Progress, a think tank with close ties to the White House.

A native of Stillwater, Minn., McDonough obtained a master's degree from Georgetown University in 1996 and soon became a foreign policy staffer in the House, then later in the Senate under Daschle, the top Senate Democrat at the time. Like so many of the president's senior aides, his work for Obama started during the 2008 campaign, where he served as a foreign policy aide and was a senior adviser on the transition team. In 2009, he became the chief of staff for Obama's national security staff.

Announcing his choice on Friday in the White House, Obama said McDonough was not only one of his closest advisers but also one of his closest friends, recounting the "countless crises" during the first term that had engrossed McDonough at all hours of the day.

"I've actually begun to think that Denis likes pulling all-nighters," Obama said to knowing laughter from fellow staffers in the East Room. "The truth is nobody outworks Denis McDonough."

Current and former White House staffers describe McDonough as an exceptionally hard worker with deep loyalty to the president. Highly regarded by fellow White House staffers, McDonough has a deep well of experience navigating tough national security issues; he is among the top officials photographed with Obama in the situation room in 2011 as Navy SEALs carried out the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

But McDonough is also known for putting a human touch on his demanding job, occasionally sending handwritten thank-you notes to co-workers for their help on projects or foreign trips.

"You often find in Washington people very skillful on substance. You have very good people on the politics of people. It's a fairly rare staffer who combines the two," said former Rep. Lee Hamilton, D-Ind., who employed McDonough as a foreign policy adviser in the 1990s and described his demeanor as calm and reasonable. "Firm, commanding in a sense. He had command of the facts without being offensive in any way."

That's important, because Obama has made no secret of his preference for a low-key work environment, free of the drama and clash of personalities that can so often distract from the pursuit of a policy agenda.

Obama's first chief of staff, current Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, was known more for volatility than cool-headedness. And some administration officials still bristle at the president's attempt to bring in an outsider for the chief of staff job ? Bill Daly, who replaced Emanuel but only lasted about a year before leaving Washington. McDonough is expected to be more in the mold of Lew, the even-keeled budget guru who, like McDonough, had already amassed a lengthy Washington resume before becoming Obama's chief of staff.

But what McDonough boasts in foreign policy expertise he lacks when it comes to domestic policy, which encompasses the bulk of the major issues the president will confront as his second term gets under way. Looming over the start of McDonough's term as chief of staff are a set of fiscal showdowns over debt and government spending, a heated campaign for gun control legislation and a major push for comprehensive immigration reform.

Although McDonough's portfolio has been national security, he is involved in daily senior staff meetings at the White House that often focus on domestic issues. Last year, when the White House was embroiled in an internal debate over a mandate requiring religious organizations to offer contraception coverage, McDonough, a Catholic and one of 11 children, was among a handful of aides who raised concerns.

Obama is expected to surround McDonough with aides who have broader experience on domestic issues and congressional negotiations ? most notably Rob Nabors, Obama's legislative director and chief negotiator with Capitol Hill, who the president tapped Friday to become his new deputy chief of staff for policy.

"He does not have the kind of background that Jack Lew had in budget matters, so he'll have to bring on board some very knowledgeable people," said Hamilton. "He probably already has."

New Foam to Save Lives on the Battlefield

When an injury causes severe internal bleeding, patients need to get to the operating table quickly to survive. But in a war zone, where explosions and shrapnel can cause some of the most traumatic of these injuries, medical attention is often more than an hour away. Medical researchers have been tinkering with numerous solutions to try to keep more injured soldiers alive; now scientists at Arsenal Medical, a private company based in Watertown, Mass., are developing a foam compound designed to stop the bleeding until the patient can get into surgery.

The treatment for severe abdominal bleeding, which just received a DARPA Phase II contract for $15.5 million, consists of injecting two liquids into the belly button. Upma Sharma, head of the research team, describes the double-barreled syringe as working like an epoxy gun: When the liquids combine, they form a polyurethane foam that expands and hardens. As the foam conforms to the patient's internal organs and presses against them, it slows the bleeding. Once the patient is hospitalized, a surgeon can remove the foam and operate.

The team's first DARPA contract, which requested a biological material that could bind to injured tissue and stop bleeding, specifically asked that researchers not explore foam as an option. So many previous teams had worked with foam compounds already that the military had become skeptical of them, as no one had figured out how to use foam for internal wounds?in other attempts, pooling blood inside the abdomen pushed the foam out of the way.

Originally Sharma's team used foam only as a transport mechanism for the biological bonding system they hoped to develop, which would have delivered specialized ligands, or small molecules that bind to specific proteins, to the site of a wound to block blood loss. After running into the same obstacles as other foam-based solutions, and a little trial and error, they found the solution: Instead of making a compound that mixed with blood, they needed one that refused to mix with it. This repelling effect allowed the foam to push blood away, forcing it away from the wound. Once the researchers figured out how to get foam to the injured tissue, they saw their subjects' survival rates go up?even without any added biological material. When they showed DARPA the data, they got the green light to focus on the foam itself.

"We're really excited about the potential impact it can have on a really severe problem for the military," Sharma tells PM, "and it's been great to see everyone come together to support it."

The team is in the earliest stages of engaging with the FDA, which means human trials are far off. But animal trials have been promising so far. In pigs inflicted with liver trauma, survival rates rose from 10 percent to 100 percent for the first hour after injury when the scientists used the foam, and to 70 percent for 3 hours.

The main hurdle, Sharma admits, is removing the foam safely so surgery can commence. Cutting a patient from pelvis to sternum in order to remove a block of foam sounds pretty invasive, but Sharma points out that such an incision is already necessary to repair the kind of internal damage suffered by patients who need the foam. And it seems as if the foam has no long-term effects on the organs it compresses. In a second round of trials, pigs with lower trauma levels were treated with foam, which was then removed. Three weeks later they were examined and showed no negative effects.

"We got very excited when we had this compelling efficacy signal," she says, "but the next question is safety. You don't want to convert a quick death into a very slow death."

There are many steps to take before the product can be taken to the battlefield, but Sharma believes it could change the prognoses for soldiers, and someday even civilians, with traumatic internal injuries.

Wayne LaPierre, NRA Leader, Responds To Obama Inaugural Address

WASHINGTON -- Wayne LaPierre, chief executive of the National Rifle Association, on Tuesday delivered a strange and strident rebuttal to President Barack Obama's inaugural address, accusing the president of reducing the U.S. Constitution to "a blank slate for anyone's graffitti" and lavishly praising a Supreme Court justice who famously ruled to limit gun rights.

Speaking at the annual Weatherby International Hunting and Conservation Awards in Reno, Nev., LaPierre zeroed in on a line in Obama's inaugural address, delivered Monday, in which the president said "we cannot afford to mistake absolutism for principle." The line was a subtle reference to the gun control debate, and the tendency of gun rights activists to interpret the Second Amendment as giving carte blanche rights to buy and carry any type of firearm anywhere.

"Absolutes do exist, it's the basis of all civilization," said LaPierre. "Without those absolutes, Democracy decays into nothing more than two wolves and one lamb voting on who to eat for lunch."

Surprisingly, LaPierre renewed a widely criticized argument the NRA put forth last week in an attack ad featuring the president's two daughters. "We believe that we deserve and have every right to the same level of freedom that government leaders reserve for themselves -- to defend ourselves and our families with semi-automatic firearms technology," LaPierre said. "We believe that if neither criminals nor the political class -- with their bodyguards and security people -- are limited by magazine capacity, we shouldn't be limited in our capacity, either."

Using terms better suited to a talk radio host than to the leader of the nation's largest gun lobby, LaPierre said Obama's address "makes a mockery" of the Declaration of Independence and the notion of "unalienable rights." LaPierre repeatedly addressed Obama in the speech, delivered to a black-tie crowd at the hunting awards benefit dinner. "Words have meanings, Mr. President, and those meanings are absolute," LaPierre said. "And when absolutes are abandoned for principles, the U.S. Constitution becomes a blank slate for anyone's graffitti."

LaPierre told the crowd the president "doesn't understand you. He doesn't agree with the freedoms you cherish. If the only way he can force you to give 'em up is through scorn and ridicule, he's more than willing to do it -- even as he claims the moral high ground."

LaPierre quoted former Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, a one-time Democratic congressman who served on the high court in the 1930s. "Justice Black understood the danger of self-appointed arbiters of what freedom really means, like President Obama," LaPierre said.

But Black is a problematic hero for LaPierre. In 1939, Black and fellow Supreme Court justices ruled unanimously in a landmark gun control case, United States v. Miller, that the Second Amendment does not protect blanket access for citizens to any type of firearm.

The NRA and other gun rights groups groups are gearing up for a legislative battle in Congress during the coming weeks over a proposed ban on military style weapons, and limits on the size of gun magazines.

Google rises as mobile advertising concerns ease

(Reuters) - Shares of Google Inc rose 6 percent in early trading on Wednesday as an improvement in the company's core search business in the fourth quarter allayed concerns that its growth would slow as advertising moves on to smartphones and tablets.

Google does not break down revenue for mobile advertising but its average cost-per-click, which measures the price advertisers pay Google, declined 6 percent from a year earlier, a big improvement over the third quarter's 15 percent slide.

"We come out of the fourth quarter feeling better about Google's mobile transition and segment growth rate going forward," J.P. Morgan Securities analyst Doug Anmuth said in a note to clients.

"As the business continues to shift toward mobile and advertisers think holistically about clicks rather than about which devices they're coming from ... the Street will as well," said Anmuth, who raised his share price target by $58 to $860.

Google shares were trading at $747.39 in early trade. The stock hit a high of $759.43 in October, before retreating 9 percent on worries about slow advertising growth and losses at its Motorola business.

The company's better-than-expected results triggered a rush of stock price target upgrades on Wednesday, with analysts saying the company's mobile advertisement business would boost revenue in the longer term.

At least 12 brokerages raised their price targets on Google's stock.

"Long term, Google will be able to tie offline activity/purchases to online/mobile ads, which will better demonstrate the value of mobile and could encourage advertisers to spend more," said Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, who raised his price target to $828 from $775.

On an average, the 12 analysts including J.P. Morgan, Raymond James, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, RBC Capital Markets and Piper Jaffray, raised their targets by $40. Cantor Fitzgerald was the most bullish, raising its target by $80 to $900.

"Fourth-quarter results highlight very healthy performances in both search and display, confirming Google's position as one of the best global plays on secular growth in online advertising and e-commerce," Cantor Fitzgerald analysts said.

"Motorola remains a show-me story, but one that seems on track for a turnaround, with only modest expectations."

Google bought the Motorola Mobility mobile phone business in 2011 to gain control of important mobile patents that would arm it better in its rivalry against Apple Inc and other large technology companies. (http://r.reuters.com/hut45t)

The business has been losing money but Google has said the acquisition will ultimately position it better in a changing technology landscape defined by mobile gadgets and social networking.

The company sold the television set-top box business that came along with the Motorola Mobility purchase in December.

Motorola Mobility posted an operating loss of $353 million for the fourth quarter.

Nexus 4 back in stock on T-Mobile website

Android Central

We heard last week that the Nexus 4 would be back up for sale from T-Mobile directly starting January 23rd, and it has shown up right on time. Provided you're willing to sign up for 2 years on a Classic Plan at T-Mobile the 16GB Nexus 4 can be yours for $199.99, or if you decide to keep it off-contract (seriously consider this route) you can have it for $499.99 after mail-in rebate.

We're not sure how many are available, but hopefully it's enough to at least let some people have their chance at the latest Nexus. As for proper availability in the Play Store at $299 and $349... who knows. Here's hoping that this new wave of stock to T-Mobile means there's more on the way to Google as well.

Bellator?s Rick Hawn says sponsor stopped check after loss to Michael Chandler

UPDATE: MMA Fighting reports that HTFU, a clothing brand, has agreed to pay Hawn.

Bellator's Rick Hawn lost to Michael Chandler last Thursday in a title fight. Hawn, an Olympian in judo, was submitted in the second round. The fight was a part of Bellator's first broadcast on Spike, and was viewed by just under a million viewers.

Still, Hawn says one of his sponsors wasn't happy his performance, and stopped his check.

So one of my main sponsors from my fight canceled his check cuz he wasnt happy with the outcome or my performance. Read his explanations below.

"At this point, a stop payment has been placed on check which cannot be cashed or deposited now"

"I will not comment on Rick and his fight. That is not my place. But what I will tell you is this: I took a huge chance with him. TV exposure was great?but it only holds weight if he wins or puts on a good show. Neither happened. At the end of the day?not one sole (sp) will run to [my] store and buy product because they [saw my logo and saw] Rick loose (sp) the fight. I've made it my career and business to know what nets a return on investment for the brand?and this is the number 1 reason why I DO NOT hand out money or product to fighters."

Its funny how all my pics wearing his product are still up on his company pages even after he says and does all this stuff!!

A lawsuit is pending so I cannot comment on who it is just yet but stay tuned.

This isn't a sponsor dropping a fighter after a bad performance or two. It's a sponsor making a deal to pay a fighter, and then breaking that deal.

When a sponsor signs on with a fighter, it's a risk. That fighter may lose. That fighter may get injured, or not perform the way you or your company want him to. But that's the risk you take when getting involved with MMA or any sport where companies sponsor individual athletes.

When Cain Velasquez's sponsors signed onto the UFC heavyweight champion's fight on Fox last November, they knew there was a chance he would be knocked out in the first round. They took that risk because the rewards of being associated with the champ are so great. Hawn's sponsor did the same.

Hawn's sponsor wants to have it both ways -- get the glory of working with a winner without the risk of having a loser on their payroll. It doesn't work that way. Hopefully, Hawn's lawsuit will expose the business for being so low.

Thanks, Bloody Elbow.

IMF sees modest 2013 improvement for world economy

(AP) ? The International Monetary Fund is projecting a modest rise in global economic growth for 2013, but also warning that problems in the eurozone and the United States could derail momentum.

The report Wednesday, an update of the fund's World Economic Outlook, largely tracked the initial estimate from October, revising global growth down slightly by one-tenth of a percentage point, to 3.5 percent. The world economy grew 3.2 percent in 2012, according to IMF estimates.

"Some cautious optimism may indeed be justified," said the IMF's chief economist, Olivier Blanchard. "But we should be under no illusions: there remain considerable challenges ahead."

The IMF downgraded its forecast for the 17-country eurozone, projecting a slight economic contraction for 2013. It said that despite positive policy steps to tackle the debt crisis in some eurozone countries, continued uncertainty about a resolution to the crisis is weighing down growth prospects.

The IMF warned that the eurozone "continues to pose a large downside risk to the global outlook."

The revised report was more optimistic about the U.S. economy, forecast to grow by 2 percent for 2013. But prospects could change depending on impending tax and spending decisions. The U.S. government faces a series of budget negotiations as it tries to navigate mandated spending cuts and a dispute between President Barack Obama and lawmakers over the country's borrowing authority.

The IMF warned that the U.S. should avoid sharp cuts in the short term, but improve its books over the medium term by cutting entitlements and passing tax changes.

The updated report projected that stimulus policies in Japan would pull that country out of a brief recession, but said Japan had to deal with its debt in the medium term. Growth in China is projected to be 8.2 percent in 2013 compared with 7.8 percent in 2012.

The IMF also noted that growth in developing economies could be hurt by the problems still facing the U.S., Europe and Japan.

Sony grows E-mount lens collection with 20mm pancake, 18-200mm power zoom

Sony grows Emount lens collection to 13 with 20mm pancake, 18200mm power zoom

One of the most common criticisms circling Sony's NEX lineup and mirrorless cameras as a whole is limited lens selection, so we're always happy to see new high-end optics make their debut. Today, Sony's doing its part to make its products more appealing by adding two new lenses (for a total of 13): a 20mm f/2.8 pancake and a 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS powered-zoom optic, which first made its debut with the VG30 camcorder, but will now be available as a standalone purchase. That first model will ship in April for $350, while the zoom lens will be available in March for $1,200. Photography buffs can catch a few more details in the PR just past the break.

Sony Expands Lens Lineup for α E-Mount Camera System with New Wide-Angle and Telephoto Models

New 20mm f/2.8 "pancake" lens and Video-friendly 18-200mm f/3.5 - f/6.3 "Power Zoom" lens extend creative possibilities

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 22, 2013 - Sony is expanding its popular E-mount camera system with the addition of two new lenses compatible with all α E-Mount cameras and semi-professional camcorders.

New 20mm F2.8 'pancake' wide angle lens (model SEL20F28)

When mounted on any Sony α E-Mount camera, the sharp new SEL20F28 "pancake" lens creates an exceptionally versatile, portable package ideal for a broad range of everyday shooting opportunities ranging from interiors to landscapes, street photography, casual snapshots and more.

The new lens features an ultra-slim design approximately 20mm from lens front to back, and with its wide angle of view (30mm on 35mm equivalent) and bright F2.8 aperture, it produces excellent contrast, resolution and clarity across the frame for both still image and full HD video shooting.

New 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Powered Telephoto Zoom Lens (model SELP18200)

Originally offered only as a kit lens for the new NEX-VG30 camcorder introduced this past fall, the new SELP18200 powered telephoto zoom lens will now be available for purchase as a stand-alone lens.

Designed for serious videographers, the high-quality lens offers a generous 11x magnification range and whisper-quiet power zoom mechanics, focusing and aperture operation. This allows for smooth cinematic transitions when adjusting zoom level or manual settings during shooting. It features a comfortably positioned zoom lever that works with a switch on the lens barrel, allowing zoom speed to be selected in three different steps - from slow, beautiful shifts in perspective to dramatic crash-zoom effects. Zoom can also be controlled directly from compatible NEX-VG900, NEX-VG30 and NEX-FS700 (requires firmware update) video cameras.

The new lens also has built-in Optical SteadyShot[TM], which cuts the effects of camera shake and minimizes camera blur while shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds. Additionally, Active Mode further enhances stabilization at the wide end of the 11x zoom range ensuring smooth, stable footage even if the shooter is in motion. While the new SELP18200 lens is optimized for video, it's also a flexible choice for shooting still photography - from expansive landscapes to high impact close-ups of wildlife or athletes - with Sony's α E-Mount range of interchangeable lens still cameras.

Sony α E-mount lens family expansion

These new models expand the Sony E-mount family to 13 native E-mount lenses plus two converters, covering virtually any shooting situation for photographers and videographers alike. Spanning ultra-wide angle, powerful telezoom, macro and fast, bright primes, the range includes premium optics by Sony and Carl Zeiss, and offers refined performance and easy handling throughout the line.

Pricing and Availability

The new E 20mm F2.8 (SEL20F28) wide-angle prime lens will be available this April for about $350.

The new E PZ18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS (SELP18200) motorized telezoom lens will be available this March for about $1200.

The Sony α family of cameras, camcorders, lenses and accessories can be purchased at Sony retail stores, online at www.store.sony.com and at all other authorized retailers throughout the Sony dealer network.

Are You A Nice Guy Stuck In The Friend Zone? You Can Get Out!

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

By Amanda Fox

Guys, are you stuck in the friend zone? You know what the friend zone is ? that relationship you have that you know is never going anywhere no matter how much you want it to because -? wait for it? ? you?re friends. You might even be her best friend that she spills every deep dark secret too. You know what she likes and even who she likes ? and it isn?t you! At least not the way you want it to be. Since our column ?How Nice Guys Can Get The Girl? ran, a lot of you guys have complained that nice guys are terminally stuck in the friend zone and never get out of it. Today, we?re going to tour the friend zone and give you some tips on how to get out of it ? and ladies ? some of this applies to you. Girls can be friend zoned too.

Things get complicated and confusing

The first circle of friend zone, not unlike the rings of hell, is that relationship where you spend a ton of time together. You keep thinking that somehow, some bit of serendipity will put all the pieces in place and you?ll be together romantically. A real couple. The problem is, she sees you no different than she might her sassy gay guy friend (Even though you aren?t gay) and as a result you wind up holding her purse and shopping bags on a regular basis. You might see her pick out the lingerie, but you?ll never see her in it.

The second circle is the first kicked up a notch. In this one there is a lot of playful touching. Toss in some meaningless yet wistful glances that keep you more bound up than eating 50 eggs and you?re getting close. What really sucks here is that you think you have a shot. Just as soon as she breaks up with that loser or settles a few personal issues, she is going to be all over you! (In your mind).

Next, we move on to the circle where you are her combination dumping ground / handyman ? and you don?t even know it. Of course you?ll help her cover rent. It was you after all that told her to dump that lousy roommate and the economy is tough on everyone. Sure you?ll give her all kinds of advice on who she is dating and wants to date ? neither of which includes you. And you?ll give genuinely good advice. Then you?ll watch it blow up and be there to pick up the pieces like only a great friend could. Or it works and you die a slow painful death inside. Yes, it does suck.

Then we have an all-time favorite soul crusher ? ?If only things were a little different . . .?. This encompasses everything above and has the kicker that you really believe there is a glimmer of hope. You wonder what you could do different to make her see you?re right for her in the here and now. You curse time and circumstances, holding on because one day . . . things might be a little different. The only problem is they never are. You?re taste testing wedding cakes with her two years later when she marries the car dealership guy ?Beamer Bob?. And what is worse is you still think there is some weird storybook/Hollywood ending that brings you together at the last minute as red velvet cake passes over your tongue.

Now that we?ve taken a tour of what is effectively, hell, let?s see what you can do about staying out of there.

?

1. Be clear about your intentions. Don?t play this ridiculous game where you ask someone out with a group friends and start thinking in your head it?s a date. It?s not a date! It?s friends hanging out. You have to buck up and say would you like to go out with me on a date. Sure you might get turned down, but better that than sitting around wondering what if.

2. Never sell yourself short. It?s good to be friends and I?ll never say it isn?t. Being friends can be phenomenally satisfying, but you are worth having someone love you as more than a friend. Unless you?re a complete tool.? You don?t have to cling to something that isn?t going to happen.

3. Don?t allow yourself to be inundated with anything you can?t handle hearing. If it is ripping you apart inside to hear about who she likes or what kind of sex they had on the hood of a Chevy behind Chili?s ? say so! All it takes is saying ?we need to draw some lines concerning what you tell me about your relationships.? This may be a coffin nail too, but seriously ? if you can?t handle it, you can?t handle it! See #2 to back this up.

4. Have a hard, but necessary, talk with yourself about whether or not you can actually be friends even if it is tearing your soul apart. If you can?t find happiness in her happiness with someone else that says two things:

  • A. You don?t really love her and need to let it go! You?re overly infatuated and that is nothing but bad juju for everyone.
  • B. You need to start loving yourself. Work on positive affirmations daily (I don?t care how cheesy that sounds, it works) and refer back to #2 yet again. You are worthy of love.

5. Finally, don?t invent things that aren?t there and never will be. Just because she texts you to ask for help with a flat tire does not mean she wants to bear your children. You need to be able to tell the difference between a friend telling you that they love you and someone with a real, romantic, I want to grow old with you intention saying I love you. There is a difference so don?t pretend there isn?t.

There you go! A tour of the friend zone and how to get, or preferably, stay out of it. You may wonder what I actually know about this and I can tell you ? years upon years of experience. I?ve been on both sides. I know how it happens. I know why it happens and how it feels. I also know the value of believing I am worthy of love ? and it?s not always easy. I know how to maintain a friendship on steroids in the fourth circle of friend zone hell because I?ve done it!

Supreme Overlord of the friend zone

The biggest thing in all of this is you have to be open with your feelings and you have to decide whether you can handle things not going the way you want.? Here?s a little secret ? I?ve friend zoned more people than I can count because they were never open with their feelings and in a few cases . . . something might have happened if they were. I?ve been friend zoned because I did the same exact thing only to find when it?s too late . . . something might have happened.

Love yourself and don?t live with regret. To someone, you are the hand they are waiting to hold in theirs.

Crow on Armstrong: 'The truth will set you free'

Joel Saget / AFP - Getty Images file

Lance Armstrong and Sheryl Crow pose after the fourth stage of the 92nd Tour de France on July 5, 2005.

By Us Weekly

Sheryl speaks. Sheryl Crow broke her silence on ex-boyfriend Lance Armstrong's shocking fall from grace to "Entertainment Tonight" on Monday. Addressing Armstrong's long-awaited confession -- he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs to Oprah Winfrey last week -- the "Strong Enough" singer, 50, was philosophical about the athlete, whom she dated from 2003 to 2006.

PHOTOS: Sheryl and Lance's broken engagement

"[It's] got to be really hard to walk around knowing that you're not telling the truth about something," Crow said of Armstrong, 41. "I think that honesty is always the best bet and that the truth will set you free," added the Grammy winner, now the single mom to two adopted boys. "To carry a weight like that around would be devastating in the long run ... I always contend that the truth is the best way to go."

PHOTOS: Sheryl's amazing bikini body

Telling Winfrey that he used a "cocktail" before cycling competitions (EPO, blood transfusions and testosterone), Armstrong told Winfrey: "I view this situation as one big lie that I repeated a lot of times. I know the truth. The truth isn't what was out there. The truth isn't what I said."

PHOTOS: Biggest sports scandals of all time

"I'm a flawed character, as I well know," Armstrong, who has been stripped of all his titles and endorsements, said. "All the fault and all the blame here falls on me."

Google's Q4 Earnings - Business Insider

? Revenue: $14.42 billion vs. $12.36 billion

? Non-GAAP EPS: $10.65 vs. $10.52.

? CPC was down 6% year over year, but up 2% q/q, arresting what had been a quarterly decline for the past several quarters.

That's a decent beat, and the stock is up 3%.

?We ended 2012 with a strong quarter,? CEO Larry Page said in a canned quote.

?Revenues were up 36% year-on-year, and 8% quarter-on-quarter. And we hit $50 billion in revenues for the first time last year ? not a bad achievement in just a decade and a half. In today?s multi-screen world we face tremendous opportunities as a technology company focused on user benefit. It?s an incredibly exciting time to be at Google.?

Google will have an earnings call to discuss the earnings starting around 4:30pm.

Google

Knowledge graph is bringing perfect search closer. Search for Nikola Tesla, you get this beautiful page of results. No need to look further.

Last quarter knowledge graph in seven new languages.

Most accurate and comprehensive maps in the world. A few years ago driving around the world to map it out might seem crazy. Today, makes sense.

Google Maps for iOS reinvigorated the product. It was downloaded over 10 million times in 48 hours. In fact, Google Maps are [loved by iOS users].

We feel naked w. out our smartphones. Many users have a latop, phone, tablet, we are in "uncharted" territory. Faster adoption than ever before. That's why we put so much focus on devices. One of our biggest bets. As well as software. Best of Google in one easy to use package.

I love mine. Takes care of itself.

Could do better managing supply. Considering holiday excitement, there is a tremendous opportunity.

Deals with Time and Warner Music Group, deals with movies, music and publishers, not even Play's 1 year anniversary.

Smartphones should have better batteries. Phones shouldn't go splat.

Every day I come to work excited about what we're doing. Build world changing products. Ambitious plans we have are only just getting started.

Motorola home operations is presented as discontinued operations, it makes y/y and q/q comps harder.

I can't live blog these, I will miss stuff. So I will grab important numbers/ideas.

At the very beginning. No one should be surprised if results are variable. We're working thru a 12-18 month product pipeline.

Would have been down 4% y/y if not for that.

Southern Europe softer.

Enterprise gaining traction.

Patrick: On Google sites, quite a bit of noise because of FX. Overall, pleased with growth around 20%, last quarter more headwinds. We are pleased with YouTube business. Despite FX noise, which carriers over to sites, we're pleased with overall growth.

On TAC, as we said, we think of TAC, it's distribution and it's worth paying for. Our apps across, and it's true for mobile. All of the mobile is thriving to the extent that it is. Nothing new here, but excited by the trends.

Larry: Rolled out knowledge graph recently, some of the internationalization is hard work. Something like 1% of where we should be. Economics point, I think, way we look at it is we provide better answers, so we can grow the business. Increase the modality, voice, mobile, I'm super excited. Generally we monetize these things.

Knowledge runs on right side where ads run, so could be short term impact, but getting people better answers is good in the long run.

Just rolled out Google shopping. Tremendous uptake from consumers, but no details on how it will change.

Larry: I think we've always done a good job sending people to the right places. I don't think that being able to answer complex question wouldn't mean sending to other site. I think I used the hotel. Still might use other sites. But we are looking at those things. Google aspiration do that for any area, not just travel. Working with as many companies as we can. Trying to be practical about it. Assets in travel.

Patrick: Answer, [CPC] on a y/y basis, down 4%, on q/q up 1%, fix FX adjusted

Larry: I think that people are always focused on monetization of maps. Important to look at history. Thought it was critical to search experience. If we look at part that is geographically related, we need to understand where things are in the real world. We make quite a bit of money on web search, so we already make quite a bit of money in that way, which let us make those investments. Early stages of monetization on maps themselves. Still in early stages.

Asking about graph search ... when we think about search, organize the world's information. Been at that for quite a while. Investments in all sorts of areas like maps. There's knowledge search, mixing data, we continue to do that. Our business changed a lot. 10 years ago what you thought Google should do almost unrecognizable what it can do now.

Look at voice, and all the investment we've done there. Very focused on that.

Now is another example, answers question before you ask it.

So I feel confident of our core business. I couldn't be more excited.

Larry: I think we are excited ... in early days of Motorola in terms of Google's acquisition of it.

On driverless cars, early days. Excited about it and what it can mean for ordinary people.

Android, diff than automated cars.

Patrick: On Motorola, we do want it to be profitable. Don't forget we're working through a product pipeline.

Larry: Mobile business, doing well, tremendous growth. Serving users well, amazing progress. Rate of improvement is high. Assume usage will follow good products. Consider mobile extension of our desktop. People use maps on desktop, transferred very well. Chrome on Android is an amazing experience. Those phones are like using a desktop last year. Experiences improving a lot and quickly. Very optimistic about it. CPCs will improve. I mentioned we are working to simplify advertising process. Excited about that.

Larry: We run a number of businesses. We have a lot of people, growing at edge of what's reasonable. It has moderated.

Patrick: If you go back, it has been really lumpy. Gone from billions to hundreds of millions. Testament. You'll see a data center, we spend for data center, then an extension, just the nature of the business. Quite lumpy. A billion of CapEx, aligned with excitement around our products. Fueled by positive momentum in many areas, now is time to invest.

Larry: We find our business works better if our hiring is reasonably smooth.

Larry: Not making predictions about CPCs. I don't think this is a long term problem. I think as I've said before, advantages to mobile. Notified instantly, camera, lots of opportunities, expect that OT revolutionize marketing. Generate a lot more money than we do now.

Nikesh: On China ... we do operate there. We have ad sales. Many Android users.

Patrick: In case of Motorola no impairment related to patents from FTC decision.

Larry: Early, but excited.

Patrick: Excited about Kansas City, focused on KC, growing in terms of installs, people love the product. It's been a great success overall. It's not a hobby, we think we should be making good business, look at business expanding. We got to nail, good place to debug the product and the experience.

Larry: Over next few years, best way to predict future is to make it, so that's what we're trying to do. Google Now, if you have your question before you have it. Wouldn't it be great for you if we had answers to your questions. Would save you some time.?

Patrick: On display, we'll give numbers occasionally, but not on Q/Q.

Nikesh on iOS YouTube app: Tremendous success, we think we're excited and we think partners excited too.

Swann Bolt HD action camera shoots 1080p video, 12MP stills with laser targeting

Swann Bolt HD action camera shoots 1080p video, 12MP stills with laser targeting

We're starting to wonder where introducing lasers doesn't make everything better. Case in point: Swann's just-shipping Bolt HD action camera. While the 1080p video, microSD storage and 135-degree lens will be familiar from the Freestyle HD we saw in 2011, there's now a laser pointer to make sure the camera is on target when it isn't an option to peek through the detachable LCD. A sleeker look and an upgrade to 12-megapixel still photos also give us reason to upgrade. It's not a uniform move upwards from the Freestyle HD, however -- the Bolt HD can only submerge to 32 feet versus the 65 of its ancestor. As long as your scuba dives don't run that deep, however, the lower $200 price for the new camera might prove tempting.
