Pagano makes grand entrance in return to sideline

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Colts coach Chuck Pagano received a warm welcome in his return to the sideline Sunday, then watched his team score on its first drive.

With drums playing and the Colts cheerleaders lining up both sides of an inflatable horse, Pagano walked to his usual spot on the sideline, put on his headphones and hugged his assistants. It was his first appearance on the sideline since he began treatment for leukemia Sept. 26.

Pagano's Colts took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards to Andrew Luck's touchdown pass to Coby Fleener. The coach threw his hands in the air and wore a huge smile after Fleener caught the ball to end a 13-play drive.

Some fans brought signs to show their support for Pagano, and the team welcomed him back with a 1-minute video just before kickoff. Afterward, an emotional Pagano waved to the crowd.

During pregame warm-ups, Pagano hugged his wife and was followed by a large group of cameras. He shook hands with Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and chatted with Colts GM Ryan Grigson.

au by KDDI is Japan?s best mobile carrier

Smartphone HolderThis will most likely be the last proper survey for 2012, a look by MMD, Mobile Marketing Data Laboratory, at mobile carrier satisfaction levels, as reported by japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Few demographics were given, just that on the 18th and 19th of December 2012 664 members of the MMD monitor group between the ages of 20 and 59 and who owned a smartphone from either docomo, au or SoftBank completed a private internet-based questionnaire. The results were listed alongside the results of a similar survey from May 2012.

Note that docomo only has seen a significant drop in satisfaction with signal strength and talk area; perhaps one reason is that there has been a number of network outages over the summer, and I still see occassional dropping out of my 3G signal in and around train stations at rush hour.

Research results

Note that the following question was most likely asked as describing how satisified one was, perhaps ?Satisified?, ?Somewhat Satisfied?, ?Can?t say/no answer?, ?Somewhat dissatisfied?, and ?Dissatisfied?. The two percentages for the positive answers were then added together to give the following charts.

Q: For each of the following headings, are you satisfied with your carrier?s offerings?

Whether Packers WR Randall Cobb plays and what he does if he plays will be determined on Sunday.

Panthers WR Brandon LaFell may be on track to becoming the team?s new Steve Smith.

Falcons WR Roddy White is finally getting noticed for his ability to play through injury.

Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman says that the team?s offense has been trying to do too much.

Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, Jr. isn?t thinking about the possibility of being pursued elsewhere.

The Seahawks last failed to score in the red zone in Week Nine, when they took a knee at the nine to end a win over the Vikings.

The Rams? three leading receivers are within two yards of each other.

A doctor who hasn?t examined or treated 49ers DL Justin Smith believes he will need 12 weeks to recover from his torn triceps.

Activists say airstrike in north Syria kills 14

BEIRUT (AP) ? A government airstrike on a town in north Syria on Friday killed 14 people, mostly women and children, anti-regime activists said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the 14 were killed in a strike on the town of al-Safira, south of the northern city of Aleppo. The dead included two women and eight children.

An Aleppo activist who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons provided a list of the names of the dead and said the government often strikes the town because rebels are attacking a large military complex on its outskirts.

Rebels clashed with soldiers there on Friday, he said.

A video posted online that purported to show the site of the strike showed a large area covered with the rubble and the walls sheared off of a row of buildings nearby.

The video appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting.

Activists say the regime often takes revenge for rebel advances by bombing residential areas. They say more than 40,000 have been killed in Syria since the start of the uprising against President Bashar Assad in March 2011.

Earlier in the day, activists said that rebels stepped up their siege of a military base further to the north, near the Turkish border, and government warplanes bombed surrounding areas to support the defenders.

Use Military Retirement Calculator To Anticipate ... - Home and Family

During the first few years of service, retirement income may not be high on everybody's list of concerns. Nonetheless as their career in the army advances, figuring out retirement income with an army retirement calculator can help someone plan for the future. Retirement income for retired army is similar to civilian calculations, and they should include the same variables.

When you?re having a look at your pension plan, begin with your age, and the age at which you plan to retire. In the military, you can consider the quantity of years of service and know what % of your pay you'll receive upon retirement after an established period of years. Using these numbers in a military retirement calculator you can figure if you are going to have to find another job, or can stay home and unwind. Most calculators do not include the final year you?re employed when computing income. For example, if you intend to retire at age 65, the last year of earnings you must consider is for year 64.

When you consider income, don't forget to take into consideration your spouse?s revenue in the household totals and any amounts your married spouse has in their own retirement savings account. Individual retirement accounts should also be included in the military retirement calculator when working out the present pension savings amount.

Future Earnings Estimates Are Questionable

The earnings you realize from your current investments are questionable, at best and depending on where your savings are being held will play a significant role in its growth. A military retirement calculator can work with known numbers, but the variables in interest rates and potential for losses in market investments can make your savings plan unstable. While high-interest accounts are typically safe and consistent, their returns are also a lot lower that investments. Securities dealing however, can be rewarding, financially, they can also take a big slice of your original investment in a down market.

For post-retirement expenses, it is often worked out that 90 percent of your last year?s income will be what you may spend on living costs. When using your military retirement calculator by understanding what your total savings should be upon retirement, and working out how many years you can live on the balance, should help you determine how much more you need to save in order to survive. Knowing the amount of money you need to save can help you calculate the amount each month you've got to put away, figuring in your expected rate of growth.

This work is thanks to advisor hub. Before taking any early pension lump sum or considering a pension release, it could be prudent to order a meeting with a professional consultant as this will impact on your allowance in retirement.

Sue Runsvold: What You Do Matters

There was a time when I believed that it was the movers and shakers that could make a difference. It was the people who could do something grand, big, important -- those were the people who could make a difference that mattered and was notable. And that wasn't me!

And then one day, a light went on. I woke up in a heat controlled house, with a closet full of clothes, food in the fridge, a car to take me to my sweet job and money in my pocket. And I realized, I can make a difference! I may not be able to do something grand, big, important by the worlds standards but I can react, behave and, most importantly, share, in a way that creates a positive outcome for someone else -- someone besides me, myself and I!

While I and my many friends have been building TurningWheels For Kids, I have learned something so valuable. The low-income, disadvantaged children we serve live within families that are challenged -- financially and emotionally! There are stories, some heartbreaking! And a simple gift, a rite-of-passage, number one requested and dreamed about gift, a bike, was out of reach for these kids! Or is it?

One little boy, when given the opportunity, when asked to dream big, his eyes briefly glistened, a smile started and then, just as quickly that light faded, he shut down and he didn't dare utter what he really wanted, a bike! It was entirely too risky! That moment broke my heart! He didn't even dare to dream!

And then I started thinking -- we all have a priceless opportunity! We spend money without even thinking -- $5 for a latte, $2 for our favorite candy bar, $3 for a frozen yogurt or ice cream cone, out to lunch with our friends, $15. And then I did the math! For $9 a month for one short year, money I will not miss, I can provide a bike and a helmet through TurningWheels For Kids for a local kid! That's $.30 a day. Thirty CENTS! Can you do it? Can you step up and make a dream come true for a kid that is afraid to even dream? Just say yes! Because...

What You Do Matters!

As the holidays draw close, there are children fretting over what they are going to say when someone asks the inevitable question, "What did you get for Christmas"? What if the honest answer is nothing? Right now, today, what you choose, yes, choose to do matters a lot to a child near you. Today you have an opportunity to become a mover and shaker, maybe not by the worlds standards but certainly in the eyes of a local little girl or little boy. Are you up for the challenge? Opt in, right now, to become the person who makes a dream come true for a child that is afraid to even dream! Those kids are out there and I think those kids are worth it. Do you? Light up a child's world right now, this holiday season! Your kindness is not insignificant!

Obama back from Hawaii, Congress bickers on cliff

(AP Photo/ Evan Vucci)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama returned to the White House on Thursday from a vacation shortened by government gridlock while Democrats and Republicans snarled across a partisan divide and showed no sign of compromise to avoid year-end tax increases and spending cuts.

Adding to the woes confronting the middle class was a pending spike of $2-per-gallon or more in milk prices if lawmakers failed to pass farm legislation by year's end.

White House aides disputed reports that Obama was sending lawmakers a scaled-down plan to avoid the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts. They gave no indication he would invite congressional leaders to a White House meeting either late Thursday or possibly on Friday.

Top Senate leaders said they remain ready to seek a last-minute agreement. But a little more than four days from the deadline, there was no legislation pending in either the House or the Senate to prevent the tax hikes and spending cuts that economists say could send the economy into a recession.

Far from conciliatory, the rhetoric was confrontational and at times unusually personal.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused House Speaker John Boehner of running a dictatorship, citing his refusal to call a vote on legislation to keep taxes steady for most while letting them rise at upper incomes. The bill "would pass overwhelmingly," Reid predicted, and said the Ohio Republican won't change his mind because he fears it might cost him re-election as speaker when the new Congress convenes next week.

Boehner seems "to care more about keeping his speakership than keeping the nation on a firm financial footing," he said in remarks on the Senate floor.

A few hours later, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell expressed frustration and blamed the standoff on Obama and the Democrats. "Republicans have bent over backwards. We stepped way, way out of our comfort zone," he said, referring to GOP offers to accept higher tax rates on some taxpayers.

"We wanted an agreement, but we had no takers. The phone never rang and so here we are five days from the new year and we might finally start talking," McConnell said.

Still, he warned: "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything the Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff."

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Boehner, responded in a similar vein to Reid's comments. "Harry Reid should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff. The House has already passed legislation to do so," he said, referring to a measure that extends existing cuts at all income levels.

Addressing the GOP rank and file by conference call, Boehner said the next move is up to the Senate, which has yet to act on House-passed bills to retain expiring tax cuts at all income levels and replace across-the-board spending cuts with targeted savings aimed largely at social programs.

"The House will take this action on whatever the Senate can pass - but the Senate must act," he said, according to a participant in the call.

At the same time, Boehner told Republican lawmakers the House would convene on Sunday evening.

The risk of higher milk prices stems from the possibility that existing farm programs will expire at year's end, and neither chamber of Congress has scheduled a vote on even a temporary extension to prevent a spike. There have been unverified estimates that the cost to consumers of a gallon of milk could double without action by Congress.

The president flew home from Hawaii overnight after speaking with top congressional leaders.

Before leaving the White House last Friday, the president had called on lawmakers to pass scaled-down legislation that prevents tax increases for the middle class, raises rates at upper incomes and renews expiring unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. He said he still supports a more sweeping measure to include spending cuts to reduce deficits, but said they could wait until the new year.

That capped an unpredictable week in which Boehner pivoted away from comprehensive deficit reduction talks with Obama to an aborted attempt to push legislation through the House that retained existing tax levels except above $1 million. Anti-tax Republicans rebelled at raising rates on million-dollar earners, and Boehner backpedaled and canceled the planned vote.

Without congressional action, current tax rates will expire on Dec. 31, resulting in a $536 billion tax increase over a decade that would touch nearly all Americans. In addition, the military and other federal departments would have to begin absorbing about $110 billion in spending cuts.

Failure to avoid the "fiscal cliff" doesn't necessarily mean tax increases and spending cuts would become permanent, since the new Congress could pass legislation cancelling them retroactively after it begins its work next year.

But gridlock through the end of the year would mark a sour beginning to a two-year extension of divided government that resulted from last month's elections in which Obama won a new term and Republicans retained their majority in the House.

The tax issue in particular has been Obama's first test of muscle after his re-election in November. He ran for a new term calling for higher taxes on the wealthy, and postelection public opinion polls show continued support for his position.

Boehner's decision to support higher rates on million-dollar earners marked a significant break with long-standing GOP orthodoxy, but the resistance among his rank and file so far has trumped him as well as any mandate the president claims.

Nana Konadu To Set A Music And Dance School | Ghanamma.com

In spite of the shaky election aftermath and the political nervousness presently in Ghana, Mrs. Rawlings decided as always to relax with some music and quality drama at the just ended ?Versatile Show? concert last Friday December 14, 2012 at the National Theatre.

Former First Lady of the Republic of Ghana and founder of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings speaking to the media at the event disclosed that she is putting in a lot of work to start her music and dance school, in fulfillment of a long-held dream.

?I am crazy about music and I even want to start music and dance school,? she said. ?I?ve being planning this since I was like thirty years? It?s been my dream and I still think I should manifest it?? she adds.

Mrs. Rawlings told reporters she?s been toying with the idea of setting up a music and dance school for years, adding that she feels inspired to implement it very soon.

Nana Konadu, so far the funkiest first lady also expressed her love for Ghanaian arts and entertainment and how it can help to develop a nation, adding that she listens and follow what the young musicians are doing currently and the kind of music they produce.

Mrs. Rawlings further revealed that she sometimes suggests and advice some musicians as to kind of words they use in their music. ?I think that the arts, drama and music help a country to develop a certain way? she stressed.

Her announcement doesn?t come as a surprise to most industry players, given her public display of love for the arts. A constant face at major arts and entertainment-related events held in the Capital over the past year, Mrs. Rawlings is convinced the time to give Ghana?s arts and entertainment industry the needed push and face lift, is now.

Her taking up this initiative, is laudable and must be commended. If fulfilled, it will be a positive development for Ghana?s growing creative arts.

Chinese company buys major fruit and veg supplier

Chinese company Chevalier is finalising a deal to buy Moraitis, Australia's largest fresh produce supplier to supermarkets.

Chevalier group also has interests in construction, cars and cafes.

It's expected to take a 70 per cent stake in the Moraitis business (valued at $200 million), taking over from a private equity investor, and half of the Moraitis family shares.

Michael Worthington, of the Produce Marketers Association of Australia, says Chevalier is likely to mean more fruit and vegetable exports to Asia, and more contracts for growers.

"Moraitis is a very firmly established organisation here," he said.

"They're not going to take any of their operations offshore because their business is built upon their growers who supply them for their customers, and they need supply to work through their system."

Make Your Mac Speak For You (When Your Can't Speak for Yourself)

Make Your Mac Speak For You (When Your Can't Speak for Yourself)OS X: My roommate recently lost her voice, and that's been a challenge because we talk a lot. To fix the problem, we decided to get her Mac to talk for her. This is easy enough if you just use the TextEdit app included with OS X, but it gets a little tedious because you have to access the menu each time. Here are a couple of more convenient solutions.

The simplest option is to buy an app called Type 'n' Tell, available on the Mac App Store for $1. It really ought to be free, seeing as it does very little that the operating system doesn't already, but it's perfect for those occasions when you lose your voice and need to communicate. All you do is type what you want to say, press return, and the computer speakers it. You can even pin the windows to the top of your screen at all times for quick and easy access.

Alternatively, your best free option is to assign a keyboard shortcut to TextEdit's speech command. To do this, follow these instructions:

  1. Open System Preferences and go into the Keyboard section.
  2. Click the Keyboard Shortcuts, and then choose Application Shortcuts from the lefthand list
  3. Below the righthand list, click the + button.
  4. When new options appear, enter "Start Speaking" (without quotes) under the "Menu Title" area. Also enter a keyboard shortcut of your choice. When finished, click the Add button.

When you're finished, just select any text in TextEdit and press the keyboard shortcut you chose. It requires a little more work and is a little less convenient than the app you can buy, but if you don't want to pay anything to make your computer speak for you this is the way to go.

US military exploring Kinect for low-cost physical therapy routines

US military exploring Kinect for lowcost physical therapy routines

When Bill Gates first demoed his BASIC interpreter for the Altair, it seems a safe bet that he could've never guessed that his company would eventually be collaborating with the US military to introduce new forms of physical therapy. Thanks to Kinect, however, Microsoft and the Air Force are now hammering out the details of a system that could assist injured soldiers through the recovery process. Curiously, all of this may be accomplished with a PC, Kinect and off-the-shelf software such as ReMotion 360 -- all of which could help keep costs low -- although a proprietary system remains a possibility. In addition to reducing treatment costs, it's thought that a home-based approach could be a convenient alternative for those who don't live near care facilities.

Even beyond physical therapy, Microsoft is also exploring Kinect's usefulness for the treatment of PTSD, which could allow the afflicted to anonymously take part in group sessions through the use of avatars. To learn more of how Microsoft is flexing Kinect's muscles with the military, feel free to hit up the source link.

95% Argo

All Critics (243) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (232) | Rotten (11)

'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.

The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.

If nothing else, it proves that every so often, the CIA can pull something off - and that yes, Canadians are just about the nicest people on the planet.

The film is a whopper of a tale, one designed for Oscar nominations, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

This may be the most geek-friendly movie that never did the rounds at Comic-Con.

When Tony (Ben Affleck) lands in Tehran and trains the frightened Americans to play their parts as a Canadian film crew, Argo compares the ruses run by governments and movie studios.

The whole thing is paced like a whip, and the third act may literally be the most suspenseful piece of film I've ever seen - and yes, I have seen Rear Window. Recommended without any reservation for every and any cinemagoer.

A terrific supporting cast, especially the non A-list actors, make the dramatic license taken justified and redeem Affleck for miscasting himself in the hero's role.

A brilliant thriller that's based on a historical incident, 'Argo' is one of the best films of 2012.

A wonderfully lively and engrossing movie ...

An enthralling and deliciously entertaining movie -- and a deserved triumph for its star and director.

The details make for a rip-roaring story, which Affleck invests with old-school directorial ?lan.

Ben Affleck leaps on to the A-list of directors with this relentlessly entertaining thriller, combining comedy and nerve-jangling suspense to maximum effect.

If you're a nailbiter, bring gloves, because the suspense will see you reach your knuckles.

Surprisingly enjoyable, given that you may have little prior commitment to this story and only mildly fancy Affleck.

Affleck skilfully turns the screw of suspense, gaining added traction from an extremely convincing recreation of the setting and period.

Ben Affleck's movie tells an amazing but true story set against the context of the Iranian hostage crisis.

Talent borrows and genius steals, but Affleck does something in between: he mimics.

It's impossible to be bored by a story this good, especially with that cast.

Part of what makes this headspinning story believable is the fact that it pans out in an oddly uncomplicated way.

The shaggy and bearded Ben Affleck, barely recognisable from his former self, gives a great lead performance. Understated, intense and steely-eyed, Affleck has the screen presence of legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood.

Affleck the director is utterly sure-footed with an instinctive feel for characterization, tension and pacing as he builds the action towards a nail-biting climax.

A dum-tight thriller demonstrating that Affleck is one of the most accomplished directors working in Hollywood today.

Samsung extended battery for Galaxy S3 up for pre-order, 3000mAh for ?40

Android Central

Update: Thanks to @PDTechHD who has sent us this picture of the Samsung Galaxy S3 extended battery in its retail packaging!

If the 2100mAh battery that comes stock with the Samsung Galaxy S3 still isn't quite enough for you, you'll be pleased to hear that Samsung appears set to launch an extended battery pack for the device. The extended battery hits 3000mAh, and has appeared for pre-order at British retailer, MobileFun.

There are no images, or release date offered at this time, but the price for the battery is currently set at £39.99. Included is a replacement battery door -- in white or blue only it seems at the moment -- and the new battery will still come complete with NFC as with the standard one.

The new battery will no doubts increase the overall thickness of the device, but many will take that for such a large battery. It isn't overly priced either for an OEM accessory, but for now we'll have to watch and wait to see when they appear.

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? As the nation inches toward the economic "fiscal cliff," anxiety is growing in farm country about an obscure tangent of the Washington political standoff that reaches into the dairy industry and, indirectly, into the household budgets of consumers who buy milk and cheese.

Little noticed in the struggle over major looming tax increases and spending cuts is that the outcome could also affect the farm bill, on which Congress didn't complete action this year after it expired in September. Agriculture industry leaders hope the farm legislation can be added to any final fiscal package before the end of the year. But if no fiscal agreement is reached, and the farm legislation is left adrift, farmers could face the prospect of returning to an antiquated system for pricing milk that would bring big price increases for consumers.

"It's going to come down to whether leadership tells them in enough time to get (the farm legislation) into a bill," said Chandler Goule, lobbyist for the National Farmers Union, referring to the agriculture leaders' wait on the fiscal cliff negotiations.

The problem is serious enough that industry officials are considering fallback options. The likeliest would have Congress passing an extension of current farm law, which would provide a temporary fix.

But farmers still shudder at the thought of any prospect, even remote, of reverting to an old system under which milk could surge to $6 a gallon.

The Agricultural Act of 1949 contains the basic provisions for setting milk prices. The act is superseded every time a new farm bill is passed, but if no new bill or extension is passed the old act goes back into effect.

That law includes a mechanism for guaranteeing a minimum milk price that covers producers' costs. The government guarantees to buy their milk products at that price, but producers can usually do better selling on the consumer market. But if the old mechanism were applied to current market conditions, the government price could be double the current rate, industry officials say. Farmers would sell their dairy products to the government instead of the private market and store prices would surge. Then prices might collapse as the government eventually sold its dairy stockpiles.

"If the government is going to continue to buy it and store it, eventually you're going to have an overabundance of dairy products in storage," said Karen Gefvert, a lobbyist with the Wisconsin Farm Bureau. "That will eventually be put on the market at reduced prices and you'll have this flood of inventory that would severely depress prices."

Ray Souza, a 66-year-old dairy farmer who milks about 900 cows in Turlock, Calif., worried that surging prices for American cheese would give American consumers incentive to switch to cheeses from New Zealand and Europe.

"I'm concerned this could put us out of alignment with the global market," he said.

Consumers agree that they'd be looking for alternatives if milk or cheese prices suddenly spiked.

Jim Mitchell, a 63-year-old artist from Milwaukee, said his family of four goes through at least a gallon of milk a day but might switch to soy or almond milk.

"They're usually more expensive," he said, "but if milk goes to $6 a gallon, all of a sudden they'd be affordable."

"Or we might have to buy our own cow," his wife, Melissa, joked.

Action of the farm bill this year was stalled by disagreements over the food stamp program, with some congressional conservatives calling for deep cuts. The National Milk Producers Federation and other farm groups are pressing Congress to wrap up the legislation now rather than pass a temporary extension, which would leave issues unresolved.

Minister urges banks to "up their game" on SME lending | News | EN ...

A number of banks need to "up their game" when it comes to lending to SMEs, business minister Michael Fallon has said.

His comment come after he wrote to the chief executives of the five main high street lenders encouraging them to increase their use of the Government's Enterprise Finance Guarantee (EFG) scheme as lending levels have been "disappointing" in recent years.

According to official figures, there 7,183 loans drawn through the EFG in 2009-10 worth ?737.1 million. This declined to 4,685 loans worth ?461.2 million in 2010-11 and 2,999 loans worth ?301.3 million in 2011-12. So far in 2012-13, there have been 1,834 loans drawn worth ?201.9 million and lending for the year as a whole is expected to top ?315 million - despite the Government making ?500 million in guarantees available.

The EFG is designed to boost lending by providing a Government guarantee to backstop bank lending to businesses that would otherwise lack the security or track record to secure a standard commercial loan.

"It is crucial that banks play their part in making finance available to businesses and support growth in the economy. Banks have to lend responsibly but it is clear that a number of lenders need to up their game," Fallon said.

"The EFG scheme has been made more flexible and is now available to even more businesses. Publishing lending data should encourage these financial institutions to do more to help business thrive.

"By being more transparent on lending figures, the Government is giving SMEs the information to best secure the finance they need to grow their business. It also enables new market entrants to identify opportunities and drive improved competition and choice."

The EFG figures come after research by the Federation of Small Businesses found that less than half (49.3 per cent) of small firms that applied for finance in the fourth quarter of 2012 had secured the funding they needed.

The organisation said that this underlines the need for greater competition in the banking sector.

On the Eleventh Day of Christmas? Fitness Packages from TWO ...

Kristin-Park

I?ve never met Kristin in person, but her enthusiasm for Stroller Strides and fitness, and her passion for helping mothers comes through in every communication I?ve had with her.

Her Stroller Strides classes are about more than getting in shape. ?It?s really just a side effect,? she tells me. ?Part of my job is to get the moms in shape, but I also make sure they have time to focus on themselves.? Kristin considers another big part of her job to be keeping the kids the moms bring to class entertained. ?A lot of people say, ?Oh, my kid will never sit in his stroller during classes.? I promise you, they will.? She says during a typical class, ?We sing songs, blow bubbles. I get a little silly. I use puppets. We make sure they?re having a good time.?

Kristin also knows how tough the first steps can be. That?s why she offers a first class free, and she lets new members bring a friend. ?It?s hard to be the new girl,? she says. ?I want people to feel comfortable.?

Stroller Strides currently have exercise classes on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 8:30am. at the Salmon Run Mall, where they meet in front of Sears. Play groups are Friday after class. Those attending their first class should wear comfortable clothes and bring water to drink and a towel or yoga mat for floor exercises. Snack and stroller toys are good ideas for the kids too. Exercise bands are included with the membership, though you can borrow some at your first class. When the weather becomes warmer in the spring, classes move outside to Thompson Park. More information about classes and what to expect can be found on the Stroller Strides of Watertown website.?Those interested in trying a class are welcome to contact Kristin through Facebook, email or by phone. You can also register for a class on the website.

Parachute

Kristin?s job as a Stroller Strides instructor is a perfect fit for her, and her classes are obviously a perfect fit for her list of growing clients. Why? Read below for more about Kristin and Stroller Strides of Watertown:

NNY Life: Where are you from, and what brings you to Watertown?

Kristin: I am originally from the Watertown area (and maybe one of the few who?ve moved away and came back.) After college I married and moved out of state. We?ve lived in several different areas of the US and after thirteen years, my husband?s job brought us back to NNY.

NNY Life: Tell me a little about yourself.

Kristin: In my professional career, I am a RN with a background in maternal child health and pediatric nursing, mostly in pediatric ICU at large urban hospitals. Personally, I?ve always been active and enjoyed traveling and outdoor activities.

I caught the fitness ?bug? several years ago after working with an inspiring personal trainer who was an avid weight lifter. She educated me about clean eating and encouraged me to make incredible changes in my body that I never knew were possible. From there I went on to study nutrition and women?s strength training on my own. It?s become a passion of mine.

NNY Life: Why did you choose Stroller Strides and how is it a good fit for your family?

Kristin: I chose to bring Stroller Strides to Watertown for so many reasons. When my son was born, we lived away from family in New England and my husband had a job that took him all over the country and overseas every week. I experienced first-hand what it is like to be a new Mom and not have family close by for support. Fortunately, at the time, I had access to several Mommy & Me style programs where I could bring my son and connect with other new Moms. Once I got the courage to get out of the house and go, meeting other new Moms made a world of difference.

When I moved back to NNY my daughter was born, I was frustrated that there weren?t the Mommy & Me activities that I was used to. I still really wanted and needed that Mommy camaraderie. With this, I was determined to start something on my own and I knew it would benefit our community too, but wasn?t sure what I would do.

I began to brainstorm. I already knew that I?d wanted to share my passion and knowledge of health and fitness with other women and had been considering branching into personal training for some time, although, I didn?t want to leave my newborn daughter any more than I already did working part time as a nurse. I was familiar with the Stroller Strides program from a close Mom friend in New England who loved it. I knew one of the pearls of Stroller Strides is that I could bring my daughter with me while I taught fitness classes to other Moms who also could bring their stroller-age children with them too. It seemed to be a perfect fit. From there the process of applications and interviews began and I purchased my franchise last summer.

Park

NNY Life: What are some of the challenges you face as a business owner?

Kristin: As a mother of young children I think balance and time are always challenges no matter what you do in life. Starting a business has been much more time-consuming than I realized.

Getting the word out to my target audience has been a challenge as well. I started with what I knew and reached out to healthcare professionals in the area (Pediatricians and OB doctors). I received great feedback but most said they couldn?t endorse Stroller Strides because it?s not a non-profit organization. It?s been a challenge to get to the Ft Drum market because I am a civilian.

One of my biggest challenges has been taming the misconceptions about Stroller Strides. These are the ones I hear most often:

1. People think Stroller Strides is only for new post-partum Moms. Not true! We currently have children from 5mos up to 4.5 yrs old. As long as your children can ride in a stroller, they are welcome.

2. Several women have contacted me saying they are very interested in trying Stroller Strides but are worried because they are overweight or really out of shape. My response is not to worry because that?s what I?m here. Our group is made up of Moms of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels. (We really are!)

3. Some think that we are strictly a stroller walking group. Stroller Strides classes incorporate cardio and strength training. I make sure every workout can be tailored to the clients of all fitness levels.

4. Finally, we are NOT only about exercise. We also have weekly playgroups and monthly mom?s time outs, too. Stroller Strides is about supporting women and motherhood. Motherhood can be isolating after the baby showers are over and Dad has returned to work. New Moms often feel they are the only ones who feel the way they do when in fact many of the experiences of having a newborn are somewhat universal. Regular activity has been shown to improve mild postpartum depression, too. Moms of older stroller-age children also benefit from Stroller Strides!

NNY Life: How do you promote your business?

Kristin: I?ve promoted Stroller Strides of Watertown using community flyers, brochures at a few pediatrician and obstetrician offices who have agreed to support the program. I also have a website, a Facebook page, and list the classes on Craigslist. I am constantly looking for more ways to reach our NNY Moms.

NNY Life: What are some of your business goals?

Kristin: One of the Stroller Strides mission statements is ?Stroller Strides helps Moms make strides in fitness, motherhood and life.? I truly believe in that. Even though it may sound clich?, I really want Stroller Strides of Watertown to be a resource to connect, support and empower women with young children like those programs did for me when I was a new Mom several years ago.

Meet Nova Schenk of The Pilates Room and the Watertown YMCA

You might recognize Nova Schenk?s name from yesterday?s Music Education Centers giveaway. When I started looking around for business owners to participate in the 12 Days of NNY Christmas giveaway, Nova was one of the first people I contacted. Not only did she offer far more than I ever expected ? a four session package of one-on-one Pilates instruction in conjunction with The Pilates Room in downtown Watertown (a $180 value), she also offered the music lessons package without being asked. That?s just an example of what a generous person she is. She doesn?t just give generously, she does so without hesitation, without wondering what she?ll get in return and with a big, genuine smile on her face.

She answered a few questions about her background and the career she?s building for herself out of a basic hope for the happiness of everyone she meets.

NNY Life: Where are you from, and what brings you to Watertown?

Nova: I am originally from the Albany area, but lived in the Rochester area for fifteen years before moving to Watertown. I am here in Watertown because my husband, Christian, just recently joined the US Army as a bandsperson.

NNY Life: Tell me a little about your education and background

Nova: I have a BS in Recreation Therapy and a Masters in Public Administration. In 2005 I decided to be a stay at home mom and finish my Masters degree. After having my second child in 2006, I decided to become an aquatic fitness instructor at my local YMCA and began teaching general aquafit and aqua pilates classes there. I continued teaching until I moved to Watertown in 2011, then began instructing aqua pilates and aqua yoga, as well as land classes in both. I? have just finished my Pilates Certification and am looking forward to working more intimately with my clients in a 1:1 or small group setting.

NNY Life: Why did you choose the business you?re in and how is it a good fit for you/your family?

Nova: I have always been into sports, but my interest transformed once I became pregnant and began taking aquatic exercise classes. Once that medium transformed to land exercise I was hooked ? I love being a part of people?s happiness and overall health. My work is a great partner to my husbands musical talents and schedule, as it is quite flexible. I feel I am setting a great example for my children and they typically become my first clients. My husband and I also run a music lesson studio (Music Education Centers), which allows me to work from home and develop my instructional skills.

NNY Life: What are some of the challenges you face as a business owner?

Nova: Balancing between being flexible to accomodate other?s needs and interests and setting firm boundaries for the sake of the business.

NNY Life: What are some of your business goals?

Nova: Happiness has always been the goal of any route I have taken in my life. Exercise has been a huge contributing factor to my ability to be a happy and successful wife and mother. I have always wanted to work for myself and be able to bring my dogs to work with me :) I ultimately want to create an all-encompassing space, called ?Feel Good Inc.?, where one can find yoga and pilates classes, musical instruction, small concerts, a small cafe and library, massage therapy, art shows and displays, and other local boutique type commerce. A place where anyone of any age can go to feel good, because after all that is what it?s all about.
