The attackers and at least five Afghans were killed, officials said. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack.

It was the largest clash at the?Jalalabad?air base since February, when a suicide car bombing at the gate triggered an explosion that killed nine Afghans, six of them civilians.

In Sunday's attack, two vehicles packed with explosives barreled toward the main gate of the base around 6 a.m. local time. The first vehicle, a four-wheel-drive car, blew up at the gate, said Hazrat Hussain Mashreqiwal, a spokesman for the provincial police chief. Guards started shooting at the second vehicle before it too exploded, he added. It was unclear if the explosives were detonated by the attackers themselves or by shooting from the guards.

Two Afghan students from a private medical school were caught up in the attack and killed, as were three other Afghans working at the base, Mashreqiwal said. He did not know if the base workers were private guards, members of the security forces, or civilian employees.

Nine attackers took part in the assault in total, he said, three of whom were killed in the suicide blasts and another six gunmen who died in the ensuing fighting that lasted a few hours.

Helicopters involved

Maj. Martyn Crighton, a spokesman for the international military force in Afghanistan, said that helicopters "were deployed and used" but it was unclear if they were key to killing the militants.

The NATO military coalition described the attack as a failure.

"We can confirm insurgents, including multiple suicide bombers, attacked?Jalalabad?Airfield this morning. None of the attackers succeeded in breaching the perimeter," Lt. Col. Hagen Messer, a spokesman for the international military coalition, said in an email. He said that the fighting had ended by midmorning and that reports showed one member of the Afghan security forces was killed. Several foreign troops were wounded, but Messer did not give any numbers or details.

"The final assessment of what happened this morning is not yet complete, but initial reports indicate there were three suicide bombers," Messer said.

In the south, meanwhile, a NATO service member was killed in an insurgent attack, the international coalition said in a statement. It did not provide further details.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "The Amazing Spiderman," ''Taxi Driver" and "The Karate Kid" are getting some real resolution.

The new, restored and rebooted films from Sony Pictures are among the content coming pre-loaded on a video player bundled with Sony's first ultra-high-definition television, a massive 84-inch set that retails for $24,999.99 and features nearly four times the resolution of typical high-definition TVs.

"People ask the question, 'Do I need to get a bigger house to fit an 84-inch TV?'" said Chris Cookson, president of Sony Pictures Technologies. "The answer is that 25 inches was right for standard definition; 50 inches was right for high-def; and 84 inches is right now that we're going ultra-high-def."

Ultra HD is widely regarded as the next evolution in TV technology, but there's currently a lack of content that takes advantage of the vast resolution, though Ultra HD sets are equipped to upscale lower resolution video. Sony Corp. is hoping to overcome that pitfall that with this new player.

The Japanese electronics giant debuted the hard-disc server ? hidden in a cabinet underneath the behemoth television ? at a posh invite-only party Thursday at a private mansion in Santa Monica that featured a performance by John Legend.

The video player will include 4K content such as short films, concerts and 10 feature-length movies, including "The Other Guys," ''Salt" and "The Bridge on the River Kwai."

Sony's TV will also come with an Xperia Tablet S, which can be used as a touchscreen remote control.

"We know there are limitations with broadband and the typical size of a movie that's in 4K," said Phil Molyneux, chief operating officer of Sony Electronics. "I think this is an extremely good first step to ensure that consumers can have and enjoy the 4K experience in their home."

The electronics industry has dubbed the new flat-panel displays "Ultra HD," while Sony specifically refers to it as "4K" because it features nearly 4,000 pixels, compared to the 1,080 pixels found in "1080p" sets. Molyneux said Sony has been pushing for 4K since 2005, when the company put 4K projectors in movie theaters. Last year, Sony introduced a 4K home projector, and offered a 4K upscaling Blu-ray player earlier this year.

Molyneux teased that additional 4K content for the new player would be sent to owners on Blu-ray discs.

"It's a first step," added Molyneux. "If we've had a vision since 2005, and we've been arming and equipping for 4K content creation, I think it's fair to speculate that we're also thinking about other ways to get 4K content to consumers in their home."

LG Electronics offers a similar 84-inch Ultra HD TV. It retails for $19,999.99.

Prosecutors to question Manning in WikiLeaks case

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? Military prosecutors planned to go face-to-face for the first time Friday with an Army private charged with sending hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks.

Pfc. Bradley Manning was to appear on the witness stand again, the fourth day of a pretrial hearing at Fort Meade, Md.

He testified Thursday in support of a defense motion claiming his confinement for nine months at a Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., was so harsh that his case should be dismissed.

Manning, speaking publicly Thursday for the first time since his May 2010 arrest, said he got so used to leg irons and being locked up 23 hours a day that when he was finally transferred to medium-security confinement at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in April 2011, he felt uneasy moving freely around the cell block.

"There was the sense of, 'OK, I know they're going to put the hammer down on me soon,'" Manning said near the end of his five hours on the witness stand.

Besides being classified "maximum custody," Manning was subjected to additional restraints during his nine months at Quantico because he was either on suicide watch or considered at risk of hurting himself or others. Commanders maintained the extra restrictions despite repeated recommendations by brig psychiatrists that they be eased. They included scratchy, suicide-prevention bedding and sometimes having all his clothing, eyeglasses and reading material removed from his cell.

The military contends the treatment was proper.

Manning testified that he angered brig commander Chief Warrant Officer 2 Denise Barnes when he vented his frustration.

"There was a word, I think it was 'absurd,'" he said. "That was my opinion of how I see the restrictions at that point."

Manning said he got frustrated spending up to 23 hours a day in a windowless, 6-by-8-foot cell.

"It was pretty draining," Manning said under questioning by defense attorney David Coombs.

At one point during his testimony, Manning donned a dark-green, suicide-prevention smock resembling an oversized tank top made of stiff, thick fabric. He said it was similar to one he was issued in March 2011, several days after Quantico jailers started requiring him to surrender all his clothing and eyeglasses each night as a suicide-prevention measure. This occurred after he told them ? out of frustration, he said ? that if he really wanted to hurt himself, he could have done so with his underwear waistband or flip-flops.

Before receiving the smock, he was forced to stand naked at attention one morning for a prisoner count, he said.

"I had no socks, no underwear, I had no articles of clothing, I had no glasses," he said.

The 5-foot-3 soldier looked youthful in his dark-blue dress uniform, close-cropped hair and rimless eyeglasses. He was animated, often speaking in emphatic bursts, swiveling in the witness chair and gesturing with his hands.

Manning was polite throughout his testimony, referring to his attorney as "sir" and making frequent eye contact with Coombs and the judge. Only after watching two videos of himself speaking to his guards while wearing only his boxers ? the first video shows him surrendering his clothes ? did his voice waver.

"It brings that back, the fact that I was there," Manning said of the video.

Earlier Thursday, the military judge, Army Col. Denise Lind, accepted the terms under which Manning may plead guilty to eight of the 22 charges he faces. Coombs revealed the plea offer in early November, saying it would enable Manning to take responsibility for sending U.S. secrets to WikiLeaks.

Lind hasn't formally accepted the pleas but has indicated she will consider them at a hearing starting Dec. 10.

Under the offer, Manning would plead guilty to certain charges as violations of military regulations rather than as violations of federal espionage and computer security laws. The offenses would then carry maximum prison terms totaling 16 years rather than 72.

The pleas would include admissions that Manning sent WikiLeaks classified memos, Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, Guantanamo Bay prison records and a 2007 video clip of a U.S. helicopter crew gunning down 11 men later found to have included a Reuters news photographer and his driver.

The government could still prosecute Manning for all 22 counts he faces, including aiding the enemy. That offense carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? The army moved into a southwestern Tunisian town, an official and witnesses said Friday, the fourth day of protests that have injured more than 300 people.

President Moncef Marzouki said on television that the North African country's government has not "met the expectations of the people" and asked that a new one, smaller and specialized to deal with the unrest, be formed. The current government has about 80 members.

"Tunisia today is at a crossroads," Marzouki said.

Several Tunisian radio stations said the army had moved into Siliana. An official close to Ennahda, the moderate Islamist party of Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, said the army will replace police in Siliani. The official was not authorized to speak publicly and asked not to be named. No official announcement was made, but eye witnesses corroborated the information, saying that several army trucks and other vehicles moved in.

Up to 10,000 people marched Friday to demand more jobs, government investment and the resignation of the local governor, but the peaceful protest degenerated into clashes with police. Still, the confrontation was far less serious than a day earlier, when the army was brought in briefly to quell protests.

The local hospital says more than 300 people have been injured after days of clashes.

The president expressed concern that the unrest in Siliana could spread to other regions in Tunisia's interior.

Unrest in the poor regions outside the capital of Tunis has particular resonance here. An educated but jobless man selling vegetables in another neglected town triggered protests after he burned himself to death that toppled autocratic leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011. That in turn set off what is now known as the Arab Spring.

"Tunisia today has an opportunity that it must not miss to be a model because the world is watching us and we mustn't disappoint," Marzouki said.

The Tunisian president's ability to bring change is minimal. The prime minister is the determining force in the power structure. Marzouki, who has clashed with Jebali in the past, said new elections should be held "as soon as possible."

There was no immediate comment from the prime minister's office.

The report by the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver, also showed that builders pulled 446 permits for single-family, detached homes in October, a 70.2 percent increase from the 262 in October 2011.

October marked the 18th consecutive month that home sales activity increased from the same month a year earlier, said Jeff Whiton, CEO and executive director of the association.

In the first 10 months of last year, builders pulled 2,960 permits in the counties of Adams, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Elbert, Jefferson and all of the municipalities in the counties. Permit activity indicates future construction.

?There is not much inventory available on either the resale or the new-home side,? Whiton said. ?In that respect, builders are simply responding to market conditions. Nobody has to worry about over-building and I don?t see much potential for price discounting going on. If anything, we are going to start seeing increases in new home prices.?

Indeed, builders may try to pass on increasing construction costs, some of it caused by hurricane Sandy.

?Those type of increases typically follow big natural disasters,? Whiton said. ?We experienced that after Katrina. Hopefully, it will not last too long and will not cause a huge spike in prices.?

The theory is that construction materials will be flowing to the East Coast where Sandy ravaged buildings and homes, causing potential shortages and driving up prices elsewhere.

?That is the way many people view it,? Whiton said. ?Of course, we are a long way from New Jersey and New York.?

The cost of material and labor also are rising because of increased demand, Whiton said.

The report also showed that Richmond American Homes of Colorado and Century Communities continue to be the two top builders in the metro area, having pulled 902 and 532 permits, respectively, in the first 10 months of the year. Richmond is part of Denver-based M.D.C. Holdings Inc., one of the nation?s largest home builders.
