Car bombs kill 34 in Syria suburb

Hopd / AP

In this photo released by the Syrian official news agency SANA, a Syrian soldier, right, and citizens gather at an alley that was destroyed by two cars bombs, at Jaramana neighborhood, in the suburb of Damascus, Syria, Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012.

By Reuters

Two car bombs killed at least 34 people in a district of Damascus loyal to President Bashar Assad on Wednesday in the deadliest attack on the Syrian capital in months.

The explosions struck the eastern neighborhood of Jaramana, home to many of Syria's Druze minority as well as Christians who have fled violence elsewhere, ripping through shops and bringing debris crashing down on cars.

Once a bastion of security in Assad's 20-month campaign to crush an uprising against his rule, Damascus has been hit with increasing regularity as the rebels grow bolder.

State media said a bomb also detonated in the southern town of Bosra al-Sham, near Deraa, where the revolt began with peaceful street protests in March 2011. It also said eight "terrorists" were killed near Damascus while they tried to booby-trap a car with a bomb.

Syrians risk lives in battle to protect nation's ancient sites

Authorities severely limit independent media in Syria and it was not immediately possible to verify reports. The government said 34 people were killed in Damascus but did not give a casualty count for the Bosra al-Sham bombing.

The attacks followed two weeks of military gains by rebels who have stormed and taken army bases across Syria, exposing Assad's loss of control in northern and eastern regions despite the devastating air power which he has used to bombard opposition strongholds.

A resident of Jaramana said that rebels had been repeatedly forbidden by local Druze elders to operate in the district, which borders the capital's center where government offices are located.

"Tension have risen between Druze elders and rebels and now there are 3 or 4 small explosions a week," she told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

'Emergency red list' targets Syria's looted treasures

Underlining the growing military muscle of the rebels, bolstered by weapons captured during raids on army facilities as well as supplies from abroad, fighters shot down a war plane in northern Syria on Wednesday using an anti-aircraft missile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Opposition groups subsequently posted a video clip on the Internet that showed a man in a green jumpsuit being carried through fields. He was bleeding heavily from his head and appeared unconscious. "This is the pilot that attacked the houses of civilians," said a voice off camera.

Another video showed doctors treating the limp body of apparently the same pilot, who activists said ejected from his MiG 23 fighter jet before it crashed near Darat Ezza, about 20 miles from Aleppo.

The bloodshed came as Syria's new opposition coalition held its first full meeting on Wednesday to discuss forming a transitional government crucial to win effective Arab and Western support for the revolt against Assad.

"The objective is to name the prime minister for a transitional government, or at least have a list of candidates," said Suhair al-Atassi, one of the coalition's two vice-presidents.

A look back at the violence that has overtaken the country

The two-day meeting in Cairo will also select committees to manage aid and communications, a process that is becoming a power struggle between the Muslim Brotherhood and secular members.

Rivalries have also intensified between the opposition in exile and rebels on the ground in Syria, where the death toll has reached 40,000, including soldiers, civilians and rebels.

'Terrorist' bombs
The Syrian state news agency, SANA, described Wednesday's blasts as "terrorist bombings", a label it reserves for attacks by mainly Sunni Muslim fighters battling to overthrow Assad, a member of Syria's Alawite minority linked to Shi'ite Islam.

Two smaller bombs also exploded in Jaramana at about the same time as the car bombs, around 7 a.m. In total at least 47 people were killed, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, giving a higher toll than the government. Eighty three people were seriously wounded, the British-based Observatory said.

"Who benefits from this? Tell me who benefits from this? America, Israel, Qatar?" a man at the bomb site said to Syrian television, which broadcast footage of firefighters hosing down the blackened hulks of two vehicles and several cars crushed by debris from neighboring buildings.

Pools of blood could be seen on the road.

Most foreign powers have condemned Assad. Britain, France and Gulf countries have recognized the umbrella opposition group meeting in Cairo, the Syrian National Coalition, as the sole representative of the Syrian people.

But Assad has been able to rely on his allies, especially regional powerhouse Iran, which is believed to be bank-rolling him and supplying military support despite U.S. and European sanctions. Russia, Syria's main arms supplier, says it has only sent weapons already agreed to in previous deals.

International Syria mediator Lakhdar Brahimi is due to brief the 15-member council on Thursday and the U.N. General Assembly on Friday. There is diplomatic deadlock between Western powers, who broadly support the opposition and Assad's supporters Russia and China which have blocked Security Council action.

VERSAILLES, France (AP) ? A French appeals court overturned manslaughter convictions against Continental Airlines and a mechanic for the July 2000 crash of an Air France Concorde that killed 113 people, ruling Thursday that their mistakes did not make them legally responsible for the deaths.

The crash hastened the end for the already-faltering supersonic Concorde, synonymous with high-tech luxury but a commercial failure. The program, jointly operated by Air France and British Airways, was taken out of service in 2003.

In the accident, which occurred on July 25, 2000, the jet crashed into a hotel near Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport soon after taking off, killing all 109 people aboard and four on the ground. Most of the victims were Germans heading to a cruise in the Caribbean.

A mistake made weeks earlier and thousands of miles away by a Continental mechanic in Houston played a crucial role in the crash, the court found.

According to the original ruling, the mechanic fitted the wrong metal strip on a Continental DC-10. The piece ultimately fell off on the runway in Paris, puncturing the Concorde's tire. The burst tire sent bits of rubber into the fuel tanks, which started the fire that brought down the plane.

But the Concorde's design left it vulnerable to shock, according to judicial investigators who said officials had known about the problem for more than 20 years. The lower court ruled that though French officials had missed opportunities to improve the Concorde over the years, they could "be accused of no serious misconduct."

Stephane Gicquel, head of a group of victims' families, said Thursday's ruling left them with "a sense of powerlessness."

"The court says the plane shouldn't have flown. It did fly, but no conclusion is drawn," he said.

A French court initially convicted Continental Airlines Inc. and the mechanic in 2010 for the crash, and imposed about ?2 million ($2.7 million) in damages and fines on the carrier.

Parties including Air France and Continental compensated the families of most victims years ago, so financial claims were not the trial's focus ? the main goal was to assign responsibility. In France, unlike in many other countries, plane crashes routinely lead to trials to assign criminal responsibility ? cases that often drag on for years.

"This was a tragic accident and we support the court's decision that Continental did not bear fault," Megan McCarthy, a spokeswoman for Chicago-based United Continental Holdings Inc., said in a written statement. Continental merged with United in 2010.

At the time it was launched, the Concorde supersonic jet was the height of luxury, flying between New York and the European capitals of London and Paris in less than four hours, instead of a standard flight of over seven hours. Flying west, British Airways boasted, the flight's well-heeled travelers could effectively arrive at their destinations before they left.

In the years it took French judicial investigators to work their way to trial, amassing 80,000 pages of court documents, the Concordes were revamped, retired and finally sent to museums.

Mississippi's only abortion clinic fights to stay open

By NBC News and Reuters

Mississippi's only abortion clinic will have to close unless a federal judge halts a new state law requiring its physicians to obtain admitting privileges to local hospitals, according to a court motion filed on Wednesday.

In the motion, the Jackson Women?s Health Organization renewed its request for a federal judge to prevent state officials from enforcing a law which went into effect on July 1.

Under the new law, the clinic must hire a doctor who is a board-certified OB-GYN and who also has admitting privileges to a local hospital where patients may be referred if further treatment is needed.

The clinic's providers are board-certified OB-GYNs, but the only one with admitting privileges when the law passed provides limited service at the clinic. Currently on the clinic?s website is a statement seeking a doctor who could perform abortion care for patients up to 16 weeks in the pregnancy.

Mississippi, which had as many as 14 abortion providers in the early 1980s, has some of the country's strictest abortion laws and one of the lowest abortion rates. It also has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the United States - more than 60 percent above the national average in 2010.

In 2010, the latest year for which figures are available, 2,297 abortions were performed in Mississippi with no deaths and one complication, according to the health department.

Any facility in Mississippi that performs 10 or more abortions a month or 100 or more in a year needs a license from the state. The Jackson Women?s Health Organization in Jackson has been the sole licensed abortion clinic in the state since 2002.

Supporters of the law have made it no secret they would like to end all abortions in Mississippi, although they have also said it was designed to protect women?s health.

"It is now clear that plaintiffs have no hope of being able to comply with the Admitting Privileges Requirement," said the filing by the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights, which represents the clinic in court.

The state Department of Health, tasked with enforcing the law, gave the clinic until January to comply.

But clinic owner Diane Derzis told Reuters she sent applications on behalf of all the physicians to every hospital within a 30-mile radius. All of the hospitals ultimately rejected the requests or refused to even consider them, she said.

Jackson Women's Health Organization, based in the city of Jackson, has operated in the state for 17 years and has been Mississippi's only clinic since 2002. Its closure would mean an end to elective abortion in the state and would force women to travel elsewhere for the procedure.?

Saudi-backed religious center opens in Austria

VIENNA (AP) ? U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday urged Israel and Hamas to respect their cease-fire but said only mutual recognition of Israel's right to exist and an independent Palestine could ensure permanent peace in the region.

Ban commented during ceremonies launching a Saudi-sponsored and funded center in Vienna meant to promote dialogue between the world's main religions. Ban's pointed remarks were in contrast with other speakers who spoke in general terms about the need for religious understanding.

"I am determined to ensure that the cease-fire is sustained," he said about last week's agreement between Israel and Hamas committing both sides to stop hostilities and easing concerns of an Israeli invasion of Gaza.

Ban said that while both sides must adhere to the cease-fire, the ultimate goal in the region had to be a "two-state solution ending the (Israeli) occupation and the conflict," adding: "This is critical to regional stability."

The U.N. chief also said he is concerned about the destruction of religious artifacts by extremists in Mali, citing it as an example of the need to "promote long-term mutual understanding that transcends religious, national, cultural and ethnic boundaries."

Other dignitaries at the ceremonial launch at Vienna's ornate Hofburg palace included Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and his Austrian and Spanish counterparts, Michael Spindelegger and Jose Manual Garcia-Margallo y Marfil.

Their presence reflected their countries' backing for the center, even though the Saudis are playing the most prominent role in organizing it and meeting its expenses for the first three years.

The three spoke in over-all terms about the need to overcome religious differences and expressed hope that the center would achieve that goal.

But Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, in charge of interfaith dialogue for the Vatican departed from the script, indirectly criticizing Saudi Arabia for not allowing any religion other than Islam.

"Everyone is expecting ... honesty, vision and credibility" from the center, he said, adding it must work for "religious freedom in all its aspects for everybody," including "in countries where such freedoms are not guaranteed."

The center's board consists of three Christians, three Muslims, a Jew, a Buddhist and a Hindu. Backers hope it will promote increased tolerance not only in Europe but also in Saudi Arabia, where the ruling royal family must move cautiously in implementing reforms because of resistance from the powerful clergy.

But detractors, including Austria's Green party and moderate Muslim groups, say Saudi Arabia ? home to the conservative brand of Wahhabi Islam ? is the last country that should be hosting initiatives on religious coexistence. They say the center could be used to spread Islamic fundamentalism in Europe.

Backpacking And Hiking the Cheatham Hill Loop | Airline Travel ...

?

The Cheatham Hill Loop offers you a piece of history during the Civil War. A thousand yards from the trailhead is the battle scene. Off the Dallas Highway, the Cheatham Hill Connector is at the west side. Continue to the north of the Dead Angle towards the parking area where you will see a set of cannons near the Texas monument. It shows the Confederates and Union casualties during the attack. The Confederate commander ordered a cease fire from his men to allow his opponents to get their wounded as they were burning to their death.

From the parking lot found at the end of Cheatham Hill Drive, find the trailhead by walking to the south end of the parking lot. Although the trail can be taken whichever way you prefer, start the hike by pacing throughout the trail counter-clockwise. Passing the fence, walk towards Mebane?s Tennessee Battery at the right. It offers you a visual of the set of cannons that were used against advancing Yankees during the battle. Move past this and continue to pass through Confederate entrenchments on the left.

Then turn right at the base and circle around the path as you turn around to view the monument up close and personal. To the left of this magnificent monument, you will find a small tunnel that the Union troops built. However, they were trapped by the Confederate fire from the entrenchments above the hill as they try to create a tunnel under the Rebel position to quash it.

Now continue to climb back to Cheatham Hill Loop. Take the right trail as it leads forward left following the curve of the The Angle?s trenches.

This is the site where William Tecumseh Sherman lost his partner Union Army officer Dan McCook, who was one of the patriarchs of the ?Fighting McCooks?. McCook was also known as one of the two Ohio brothers along with their 13 sons who fought during the Civil War.

At this point, expect a moderate descent emerging out to a tom of an unknown Union soldier which was discovered by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938. Reaching an intersection, turn left from it leading you back to Cheatham Hill Loop which abruptly joins Kolb?s Farm Loop. Continue straight ahead taking the Cheatham Hill Loop turning left after leaving the intersection. The trail then leads to an ascent towards the top of the hill and ends at the parking area.

92% Holy Motors

All Critics (108) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (99) | Rotten (9)

This is the kind of it-can-mean-whatever-you-want-it-to-mean art film that I usually run from, but Carax is such a prodigiously gifted mesmerist that, if you give way, you're likely to be enfolded in the film's phantasmagoria.

Holy Motors is wild and unfettered and playful - the work of an artist who carries his love of cinema in his bones, and knows how to share that affection with the audience.

This is the most exhilarating cinema ride of 2012, a marvellously mobile mystery trip.

In "Holy Motors" Carax insists on our other selves. His daylong ride is a wary celebration, a joyful dirge that's served up in concentrated form by a roving band of accordion players. It's all in a day's work.

As cryptic and unpredictable as that premise might suggest.

Lavant is splendid in the film, and he's essentially the entire film - and yet, "Holy Motors" is somewhat more than a contraption built for a fearless performer.

Despite the millions of dollars fueling 2012's special-effects extravaganzas, I doubt I'll experience anything as exhilarating or memorable this year.

If Carax's sorcery doesn't immediately encourage interest in Oscar's fantasyland invasion, trigger the eject button on your seat. Holy Motors is not the type of cinema that should be endured.

All this random action, Carax suggests, is for some vast, abstract audience anxious to lose itself in imagined narratives.

Holy Motors is gloriously alive with experimentation and the centrality of human involvement regardless of what form the end product of their efforts takes.

Weird, baffling, and the lunatic work of a powerfully ambitious filmmaker, 'Holy Motors' is one of the best films of the year.

Andr? Breton would be proud.

I just know Holy Motors tickled me, cosmic pretensions and all.

Some day, an editor is going to put together a highlight reel of Denis Lavant's greatest performances. Will most of it be scenes from Holy Motors?

It's rare that we get the chance to encounter anything this freely inventive, this amusing, this ineffably sad and, yet, this full of life.

A fascinating and heartbreaking study of humanity, one leavened with a refreshing levity and humor that makes Carax's philosophy on life not only palatable, but thoroughly enjoyable.

A stunning exploration of identity in both society and filmmaking that features one of the best performances of the year by some stretch.

A film that not only demands repeat viewings but also makes that an attractive proposition.

A multitude of pleasures abound if one gives into the insane spell the film casts.

An exercise in overindulgence.

A glorious, gross, absurd, haunting dream and deconstruction of identity that may enthrall like a symphony or annoy like a rash.

Emerald Automotive, like Bright, has big ideas for PHEV delivery van

A plug-in hybrid delivery van sure seems like a good idea for commercial fleet customers looking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and better manage volatile gasoline prices, right? Some companies, FedEx and Frito-Lay, are already buying green vehicles, and there are many other companies making a lot of short hauls in crowded urban areas where people would notice a reduction in diesel fumes. So why is this nut so difficult to crack?

Things didn't go so well for no-longer-in-business Bright Automotive. While it didn't offer a plug-in hybrid, Azure Dynamics did offer an electrified Ford Transit Connect to a similar client base, and things didn't go well for them, either. Even if the path to success is in no way guaranteed, the UK-based Emerald Automotive is going to give it a shot.

Emerald Automotive recently moved its office to St. Louis, MO, and is staffed by a team of five ex-Lotus Engineering employees from the UK. The initial idea was to get a loan from the Department of Energy's Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing program, and that meant moving to America. The company withdrew its request after it looked like the process would be drawn out until 2013. These loans are not guaranteed to work and can be delayed, as Bright Automotive found out. On that point, Emerald CEO Andy Tempest said: "[Bright] relied on getting the DOE loan for far too long, and their break-evens were too high. It's not realistic to expect to sell 50,000 vehicles in a brand-new market."

Emerald started out by marketing its t-001 extended-range concept vehicle in Europe. The Emerald brand came from a joint venture between UK-based Intelligent Energy and Revolve Technologies, which morphed into Emerald Automotive. Emerald is still marketing in Europe and is in discussions with Royal Mail, British Telecom, DHL, Deutsche Post and others.

The t-001 is getting attention from fleets for its capacity ? 66 miles on battery power through its 25-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a total of 463 miles with its extended range internal combustion engine, powered by gasoline in the US and diesel in Europe. It's got a 75-kW electric motor driving the rear axle, allowing the van to make it up to 80 miles per hour.

Tempest claims that the monetary payback for the alt-power price premium compared to a similar-sized ICE will take 17 months in Europe, with its higher fuel prices, and 48 months in the US. Overall, the economics for Emerald look very good in the US and it appears to be worth the relocation. The company won't know for sure until 2015, when the t-001 finally goes into production.

One advantage the company has gained in going the plug-in hybrid route was taking out the huge battery pack needed in a battery-electric version. This lightened the load by 900 pounds; using a lightweight aluminum structure and thermal plastic composite body panels helps, too.

Editor's note: When you click the link to Emerald Automotive in PluginCars.com or from a Google search, it automatically routes you to a website for UK-based saxophonist AndySax. Emerald's CEO is named Andy Tempest and he's British. Very strange. Click on the video link below to learn more about Emerald's plug-in hybrid van.

Japan PM, opposition chief clash over monetary policy

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said on Sunday that the opposition's call for radical monetary easing to beat chronic deflation was "dangerous" and defended the independence of the central bank, countering arguments by the front runner in next month's election.

Noda and the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Shinzo Abe, differed sharply over monetary and foreign policy in separate television appearances ahead of the December 16 election which the opposition party is tipped to win in opinion polls.

Abe reiterated his call for setting a 2 percent inflation target, which is double the current goal of the Bank of Japan, to pull the world's third-largest economy out of a long spell of deflation.

The LDP leader also called for revising the law governing the BOJ so that the central bank is held responsible not only for price stability but also for job creation and the health of the real economy.

He said the BOJ must buy construction bonds from the market to finance infrastructure spending to rev up the economy which is sliding into a recession.

"It is a dangerous way of thinking," Noda said in a TV Asahi program. "It would undermine the central bank's independence if the government lays out the objective of monetary policy and mentions specific methods ..."

"It would be too complacent to think that the economy will improve by printing money," Noda added.

The two leaders also differed on foreign policy especially the LDP's proposal to post public servants on a permanent basis on islands at the centre of a territorial row with China to boost Tokyo's effective control.

"Putting personnel there at this time could cause further escalation of tensions. The bilateral relationship would be jeopardized if we don't have a severe view on the current circumstances," Noda said.

Sino-Japanese ties worsened sharply after the Japanese government in September bought some of the disputed islets in the East China Sea, hurting bilateral trade and investment.

"Our beautiful oceans are being threatened as Chinese ships are entering our territorial waters one after another," Abe said. "Would it be a positive message if we said, just like Prime Minister Noda does, that we would give them special considerations?", calling for a firmer response.

'Fiscal cliff' talks loom over Wall Street

21 hrs.

Holiday shopping could be a bright spot for the stock market, but both could soon stall if lawmakers don't make progress on the ?fiscal cliff? when they return in the coming week.

Congressional leaders and President Barack Obama have said they expect compromise when making a deal to stop the $500 billion wave of higher taxes and automatic spending cuts from hitting the economy early next year.

But many on Wall Street are betting Congress will resort to its fractious ways before a deal is reached, and that could upset the stock market ? and holiday shoppers, particularly those at the high end.

?This is part of the thesis for some of us who are talking about a fourth-quarter slowdown,? said Daniel Greenhaus, global market strategist at BTIG. ?Part of that thesis is consumers are on the verge of seeing their taxes adjusted in January. Is it going to affect their behavior? As you get closer to Christmas, and spending accelerates, how much of that spending will be curbed??

There is a batch of consumer-related data in the coming week, most of it housing data, with home prices on Tuesday, new-home sales Wednesday and pending home sales on Thursday.

As housing has improved, so have consumer attitudes, but the impact of Super Storm Sandy could make data look temporarily weaker. Consumer confidence and durable goods are reported on Tuesday.

?It?s going to be all fiscal cliff. There?s going to be a lot of housing data, but there will be leaks and unconfirmed quotes, and how the conversations are going will matter,? said Greenhaus.

Black Friday, and in fact, late Thanksgiving Thursday, was the start of the Christmas holiday shopping season, and early reports were strong.

Wal-Mart said it had its best Black Friday events ever this year, starting at 8 p.m. ET Thursday. Between 8 p.m. and midnight Thursday, it said its stores rang 10 million register transactions and nearly 5,000 items per second.?

Stocks rallied Friday, the first positive Black Friday since 2008.

The Dow jumped 172 points, and was 3.4 percent higher for the week at 13,009, its highest close since election day. The S&P 500 jumped 3.6 percent for the week, to 1409, and the Nasdaq was up nearly 4 percent at 2966.

Consumer discretionary stocks were up 4.4 percent for the week, one of the best performers, and the sector was the best performer since the start of November, up 2.3 percent against declines in most other sectors. Chain stores will provide a look at the holiday sales in their November sales reports, expected to be released Thursday.

Dana Telsey, CEO and chief research officer at Telsey Advisory Group, said she expects holiday sales to be up 3.5 to 4 percent this year.

?If you have to say will it be better or worse than expected, it will be better,? she said, adding there are more ?must have? gifts at higher price points this year.

While Black Friday shopping is important, she said the real make-or-break period is the last 10 days before Christmas, which accounts for 40 percent of sales. The key day, then, is the second to last Saturday before Christmas.

The timing of that is just about when Congress should be in the throes of fiscal cliff talks, and it could be a dramatic time. Telsey said the way the talks are covered in the media could have an influence on shoppers.

?There?s much more effect on the high end,? she said.

Taxes are going to go higher for the wealthy, no matter what kind of deal is reached.

There is an automatic 3.8 percent tax, resulting from the Affordable Care Act, on investment income for those couples earning $250,000 or more, and another 0.9 percent tax on each dollar earned above that threshold. The 2 percent payroll tax holiday is expected to expire for all tax brackets.

?Everybody?s paycheck goes down 2 percent next year," said Greenhaus. "That really hits home.?

What?s not clear is whether the top tax rates will be raised, as sought by Democrats, or whether other revenue sources will be found, such as reduced deductions, a path suggested by some Republicans.?

The expected increase in capital gains and dividend taxes are still unknowns, but they have already hit some stocks. The dividend-paying utilities sector was the only negative major S&P sector this past week, down close to 1 percent, and it?s the worst performer since the beginning of November, down more than 8 percent.

Analysts are split on whether the market will be able to keep rallying, and they say whether there will be a ??Santa Rally? this year depends on Congress.?

Greenhaus said the uncertainty makes it impossible to predict the outcome, and therefore stock reaction. ?You just don?t know what form and what shape this takes,? he said. ?If it drags on as I expect it to, another five percent on the downside is a fair assumption."?

Property is one area that numerous people sooo want to personal. It is made in many forms, nevertheless is usually split into three primary groups. The initial category can be residential property. This really is house exactly where men and women are living. It can include homes throughout local communities or upon significant packages of land. The 2nd classification is farmland. This is actually the type of property that producers seek out to buy in an effort to expand. The last group is commercial property. Here is the kind of real estate property which is used with regard to company uses. It is employed for all sorts of corporations which includes shops, producers and also workplaces. Each time a particular person chooses to get all of these types, this person possibly already has an idea of which kind she or he is seeking. Although they may have heard the type, they've already other factors that they'll employ to make certain that they will purchase the correct for their requirements.

The first thing that concerns is the location. People don't simply go and buy real-estate in any location where it really is offered. Instead, they've a perception of in which they really want so that it is. They own that refined into a certain state. Organizations might make this happen because of the advantages a specific state delivers with regard to organization purposes. Other individuals may choose a specific city or even region within a city. The issues people have for selecting these kind of locations are all very different, but a majority of of these contain reasons concerning his or her work in order to the faculties in your neighborhood. Children might choose to proceed to a town mainly because the faculties in that section work best from the total state. If it is something that is essential into a family, this can be an issue that they can search for. Other people search for regions which may have reduced crime prices, since they need to keep their children secure.

'Home Alone: The Holiday Heist': It takes two to fill Macaulay Culkin's ...

christian-martyn-jodelle-ferland-home-alone-the-holiday-heist.jpgA sequel may have different characters and actors, but thanks to the original movie, countless viewers know what to expect from anything with the title "Home Alone."The John Hughes-written, Chris Columbus-directed 1990 comedy -- which famously made a star of Macaulay Culkin as a resourceful youngster outwitting thieves who invaded his family's home -- has yielded three follow-ups, two for theaters and the other for television.?Now there's another: ABC Family debuts "Home Alone: The Holiday Heist" Sunday, Nov. 25, with the first "Home Alone" immediately preceding it.In the new tale, instead of Culkin's Kevin, it's a just-relocated boy named Finn (played by Christian Martyn) who fends off crooks along with his sister (Jodelle Ferland) when what the siblings initially think are ghosts haunting their new home turn out to be burglars (Malcolm McDowell, Debi Mazar, Eddie Steeples). Seven-time Emmy winner Ed Asner also is in the cast, along with Ellie Harvie and Doug Murray as the children's parents, who are stuck elsewhere as the kids mount their defense.Forever legendary to film lovers as the viciously anarchistic Alex in director Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" four decades ago, McDowell embraces the chance "Home Alone: The Holiday Heist" gives him to be more humorous for a broader age spectrum. "I enjoyed making it very much," he tells Zap2it. "I wasn't really expecting too much out of it because it's a kids' thing, but we actually had a lot of fun.

"I'd worked with the director (Peter Hewitt) before, and we worked up in Winnipeg, which is quite a beautiful city. It was very comfortable and very nice doing it ... though it was all-night shooting, which wasn't that great. I'd also worked with Debi Mazar, her having been on 'Entourage,' but I don't think we ever got to play a scene together there. We bonded on this, and it was great."

McDowell also praises young co-star Martyn as "very good, the equivalent of Macaulay Culkin, who was extraordinary in that part. That's very hard to follow."

Martyn explains that he "did an audition in Toronto, then they wanted to see me again with the director, because they didn't have him yet the first time I auditioned. And apparently, he liked me. Yay!"

Comparisons to Culkin are inevitable, Martyn realizes, and that's OK with him. "I kind of tried to play it like an over-animated kid, because that's the kind of character this is, and the kind that people want to see. My mother's known for 12 years (in other words, since Martyn was born) that I've always wanted to be acting and doing 'Home Alone,' and now, I wonder if this will be my new reputation."

It well could be for Martyn, who has done voices for the animated Canadian series "Monster Math Squad" and "Franklin and Friends." He says he enjoyed matching talents with a long-time performer such as McDowell. "He really played his character how I thought he should have, kind of a comedic but smart bad guy. He's funny, but he's not stupid."

Recently given a Lifetime Achievement Award for his horror and fantasy work by the nonprofit sCare Foundation that assists homeless and impoverished youth, McDowell is happy to share a project with Asner, who's on Broadway in the comedy "Grace" until early January.?However, the two acting veterans didn't cross paths physically on the latest "Home Alone."

"The day he arrived, I left," reports McDowell. "Actually, I met his son at the forecourt of the hotel as I was leaving for the airport. I know Ed, and I love him. To me, he's an icon, and the work that he's done through the years is incredible. He's such a wonderful actor and activist and person, I'm really sorry I didn't get to hang out with him."

Also just seen in a return guest shot on CBS' "The Mentalist," McDowell has been doing considerable television work. That has encompassed regular runs on ABC's reboot of "Fantasy Island," NBC's "Heroes," and TNT's continuing "Franklin & Bash" ... as well as HBO's now-finished "Entourage," for which McDowell hopes he'll be summoned back for the much-rumored feature-film spinoff.

"Honestly, it's not something I planned out," McDowell maintains of his home-screen appearances. "I used to work a lot in independent movies, because they were made for more mature audiences than the usual fare from the studios. Then the financing for those movies kind of got wiped out, along with everything else, with the meltdown.

"Cable television literally has filled the gap of the independent movie," McDowell reasons. "The writing is of such a high standard, and it started years ago. 'The Sopranos' was like an incredible movie every week, and that really was a game changer for everybody. All these companies -- HBO, TNT, USA, Syfy -- they're making extraordinary product now, and they've really upped the game."

Radiant Cut Diamonds the Beautiful Centrepiece of a Diamond Ring ...

Radiant cut diamonds were first developed and patented in 1977 by Henry Grossbard who was the founder of RCDC. The radiant cut diamond was the first diamond to combine the elegance of the emerald shape and the fire and brilliance of a round diamond. When the patent on the radiant cut diamond expired the radiant cut became a fully accepted diamond shape and began to be widely distributed by both wholesalers and manufacturers. In 2002 RCDC launched the Original Radiant Cut diamond brand and the original radiant cut is the only radiant cut that is guaranteed to meet the ideal proportions established by Henry Grossbard.

Much like circular shaped diamonds, radiant cut diamonds allow you to see the deep, natural clarity of the diamond. When you look at a radiant diamond from the front you can clearly distinguish the diagonal cross pattern that is created between the sides of the diamond. It is this stunning cross pattern that helps to make radiant cut diamonds more beautiful than many other types of diamond and makes it the ideal diamond to choose for the centrepiece of a diamond ring.

Traditionally a radiant cut diamond has 62 faces. 25 of these faces are on the crown, 8 on the griddle and 29 on the pavilion. The corners are we trimmed and are considered to be the signature of the diamond. Due to the shape of this type of diamond the proportions and the faces makes the colour of the diamond more visible and this cut of diamond is known for both fancy and non fancy cuts.

Rings that have been set with radiant cut diamonds are some of the most desirable rings as they have such unique style and shape and can also have very unusual colours. This kind of diamond set ring are also available in a number of unique shapes so you do not have to stick with what could be considered a boring round or rectangular shape.

Radiant cut diamonds are also very popular in engagement rings and the tradition of using radiant cut diamonds for engagement rings dates back to the fourteenth century. The diamond is usually the centrepiece of the ring but you can also attach side stones in a number of different ways. If you decide to purchase your diamond ring online you should always check the length and width of the diamond as there are no rules for these measurements. Generally there are two routes you can take when purchasing a ring with a radiant cut diamond, quality or budget. A quality radiant diamond should colour G and the clarity VS2. If you have a smaller budget you can still buy a radiant diamond but the colour would be I and the clarity SI2.

Apple asks court to include Galaxy S III with Jelly Bean, Galaxy Note II and four more in lawsuit

As usual, Apple thought Friday night on a holiday weekend was the perfect time to push some more paper through in its ongoing patent lawsuit against Samsung. According to Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents, after Samsung asked to add the latest iPads, iPhones and iPod touches to its list of claims and the court approved the addition of the iPhone 5, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 10.1, Apple is trying to put six more devices on the list. Listed in the motion are the Galaxy S III running Android Jelly Bean (but not Jelly Bean itself), Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Tab 8.9 WiFi, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Rugby Pro and Galaxy S III mini. As usual, the case will proceed, we'll wait to hear if these requests are approved by the court and in the meantime, iThings and Galaxys alike will continue to fly off the shelves. Given the season, for now it's time to be thankful we're not one of the lawyers spending their day working on this. That leaves us plenty of time for more interesting activities, like hand-to-hand combat against fellow shoppers for the right to purchase slightly discounted items.

Leonid meteor shower late tonight: Stay up, bundle up, look up

The Leonid meteor shower peaks tonight in the first of what may be two viewing climaxes this year. The sky at 3 a.m. Eastern time will be moonless, as long as you can see it. Face east.

Or, more precisely, the peak of this well-known meteor shower is coming. The annual event is predicted to climax around 3 a.m. Eastern Standard Time Saturday. But at least one forecaster, Russian astronomer Mikhail Maslovof, is predicting a second peak at around 1 a.m. Eastern time on Nov. 20.

Weather permitting, viewing conditions should be good, since the moon will have long-since set. Which is too bad, in a way, because it's presenting only a thin sliver of itself, making it possible to see the Earth's glow faintly reflecting back from the dark portion of the lunar surface.

The meteor shower gets its name from the constellation Leo ? the apparent region of origin for the display. But the tiny bits of space debris that are heated to incandescence as they enter Earth's atmosphere actually come from Comet Tempel-Tuttle, a clump of rubble and ice about a mile across that orbits the sun every 33 years.

The comet last made its closest approach to the sun, when it sheds dust and gas most profusely, in 1998. This led to some spectacular showers between 1999 and 2002 that sent as many as 3,000 objects an hour hurtling through the atmosphere.

This weekend's display is expected to be decidedly more modest, with perhaps as many as 10 meteors an hour Saturday morning, and as many as 15 an hour Tuesday morning ? a rate comparable to other Leonid showers in more recent years. Astronomers estimate that the comet shed the material for Tuesday's encounter in 1,400 AD.

The best places to view the show are in locations with little light pollution from cities or towns. At the time the shower peaks, the Leonids' apparent point of origin will be about 55 degrees above the eastern horizon. That's a bit more than halfway between the horizon and straight up, or zenith.

Bundle up and find your spot far enough in advance to allow your eyes to adjust to the dark. Your eyes become fully adapted to viewing in the dark after about 20 or 30 minutes. And if you take a flashlight, cover the lens in red cellophane to speed the process of dark-adapting once you switch off the light.

Comet Tempel-Tuttle was discovered independently by two astronomers in the mid 1860s. But it wasn't until 1981 that Donald Yeomans, a researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., tied the Leonids to Comet Tempel-Tuttle.

Yet even before the comet was discovered, the Leonids played a key role in bringing science in a young United States to wider international attention.

In 1833, the Leonids put on a breathtaking display. By some estimates, meteors were flitting through the atmosphere at rates of 100,000 to 200,000 an hour. The peak was brief enough to be visible throughout North America, but not in Europe.

The shower caught the attention of Denison Olmstead, a professor at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. He spent time gathering as much information as he could from eyewitnesses ? some of whose fields now sported meteorites ? as well as his own observations that Leo seemed to be the location in the sky from which the shower originated. Because his quest got picked up by newspapers, he was inundated with reports from up and down the East Coast.

His conclusion: Meteors were not an atmospheric phenomenon, as many long believed. Rather, they came from beyond the atmosphere. He essentially has gotten the nod for bringing the study of meteors into astronomy's fold.

So, if you happen to be watching tonight's shower from Connecticut, consider it a native-son show.

AP PHOTOS: Indonesians plagued by blindness

PADANG SIDEMPUAN, Indonesia (AP) ? They came from the remotest parts of Indonesia, taking crowded overnight ferries and riding for hours in cars or buses ? all in the hope that a simple, and free, surgical procedure would restore their eyesight.

Many patients were elderly and needed help to reach two hospitals in Sumatra where mass eye camps were held earlier this month by Nepalese surgeon Dr. Sanduk Ruit. During eight days, more than 1,400 cataracts were removed.

The patients camped out, sleeping side-by-side on military cots, eating donated food while fire trucks supplied them with water for showers and toilets. Many who had given up hope of ever seeing again left smiling after their bandages were removed.

"I've been blind for three years, and it's really bad," said Arlita Tobing, 65, whose sight was restored after the surgery. "I worked on someone's farm, but I couldn't work anymore."

Indonesia has one of the highest rates of blindness in the world, making it a target country for Ruit who travels throughout the developing world holding free mass eye camps while training doctors to perform the simple, stitch-free procedure he pioneered. He often visits hard-to-reach remote areas where health care is scarce and patients are poor. He believes that by teaching doctors how to perform his method of cataract removal, the rate of blindness can be reduced worldwide.

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness globally, affecting about 20 million people who mostly live in poor countries, according to the World Health Organization.

"We get only one life, and that life is very short. I am blessed by God to have this opportunity," said Ruit, who runs the Tilganga Eye Center in Katmandu, Nepal. "The most important of that is training, taking the idea to other people."

During the recent camps, Ruit trained six doctors from Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore.

Here, in images, are scenes from the mobile eye camps:
