Ayala Land has been at the forefront of pioneering developments that have emerged as the face of the cities that host them. Today, Ayala Land is bringing this kind of expertise to fore as it breaks ground on Vertis North, a 29-hectare integrated urban development that will rise as Quezon City?s newest city center.

The new integrated complex called ?Vertis North? will rise within the next 10 to 15 years right beside TriNoMa mall contributed by the state-owned National Housing Authority in exchange for a share of development proceeds. The partnership, which is yet to be incorporated, will be 72 percent controlled by ALI and 28 percent owned by the NHA.

?In QC, we feel that being the largest city (in Metro Manila) in terms of area and population, it truly deserves having a central business district,? ALI president Antonino Aquino said in a press briefing on Thursday.

Vertis North is seen creating close to 200,000 new jobs during its life cycle, 35,000 of which will be filled in the next three to four years under the first phase.

The first phase, which is seen to cost P12 billion, will bring in new office, retail and hotel components within a seven-hectare land area. This initial phase is seen boosting ALI?s recurring income base as it will open up a total gross floor area of 220,000 square meters for business process outsourcing firms, hotel and retail shops.

Vertis North?will converge a broad range of offices, retail, hotel, and residential development with functionality, convenience, accessibility and urban sustainability within a 10-year timeframe.

English town to burn Lance Armstrong in effigy

LONDON (AP) ? His career is in ruins and now an effigy of Lance Armstrong is about to go up in smoke.

The disgraced American cyclist has been chosen as the latest celebrity to be burned in effigy during an English town's nationally famous Bonfire Night celebrations.

Edenbridge in southeast England has built a 30-foot (9-meter) model of Armstrong, who was stripped recently of his seven Tour de France titles for doping offenses.

The effigy, to be burnt Saturday, sports a sign saying "For sale, racing bike, no longer required."

Towns across Britain light bonfires and set off fireworks on Nov. 5 to commemorate Guy Fawkes' failed plot in 1605 to blow up Parliament.

The bonfires are traditionally topped with an effigy of Fawkes but have been decorated with contemporary figures over recent years.

Previous Edenbridge effigies include comedian Russell Brand and soccer star Wayne Rooney.

BP raises dividend as Q3 profit swells 5 percent

LONDON (AP) ? Oil company BP is rewarding long-suffering shareholders with a substantial dividend increase just days after it sold a stake in a Russian joint venture for billions of dollars.

BP also revealed Tuesday that it made a net profit of $5.5 billion in the third quarter, more than offsetting the $1.34 billion loss reported in the previous three months when the company wrote down the value of some assets. It was also 5 percent higher than last year's equivalent of $5.2 billion.

Most interest came with the news that BP was raising its quarterly dividend 12.5 percent to 9 cents per share. The company's shares were up 3.4 percent to 439.3 pence in early trading in London.

"BP's performance and the strong progress we are making in transforming the company give us the confidence to increase distributions to our shareholders," said Chief Executive Bob Dudley.

"We are on track with our strategy to 2014 and are laying the right foundations for sustainable growth during the coming decade."

Last week, BP announced it was selling its 50 percent share in Russian oil company TNK-BP to state-controlled rival Rosneft for $17.1 billion cash and a 12.84 percent stake in Rosneft. BP also agreed to buy a further 5.66 percent stake in Rosneft for $4.8 billion.

"I believe our agreement will remove considerable uncertainty for our shareholders about BP's future in Russia and will secure for BP a valuable and truly distinctive position in one of the world's largest and most important oil and gas provinces," Dudley said.

BP has faced a difficult few years ever since a big and costly oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. The company booked another $59 million in costs related to the spill in the third quarter, raising the nine-month total to $882 million.

BP said it expects to make the final payment this year into a $20 billion trust fund to compensate losses from the Macondo well blowout, in which 11 people died. Since the disaster in 2010, BP has announced disposals of assets valued at $35 billion toward its goal of $38 billion.

Elsewhere, BP said its replacement cost profit, a key industry benchmark, during the period was $4.7 billion, down from $5.3 billion a year earlier. It blamed lower oil prices and production and higher costs. Revenue of $93.1 billion was also down from $97.7 billion a year earlier.

Production of oil and gas, excluding TNK-BP, was down 3 percent compared to a year ago at 2.26 million barrels a day. BP said it expects higher production in the fourth quarter as its maintenance season ends and new projects make a contribution.

Materials scientists make additive-free battery electrodes with nanoparticles

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Materials scientists have developed a simple, robust way to fabricate carbon-free and polymer-free, lightweight colloidal films for lithium-ion battery electrodes, which could greatly improve battery performance.

By developing a method for additive-free electrodes that maintain high conductivity, the researchers have opened new possibilities for reducing the weight and volume of batteries, while also creating a template system for studying the physics of nanoparticle electrodes.

The work, led by Richard Robinson, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, and graduate student Don-Hyung Ha, is featured in the Oct. 10 issue of Nano Letters (Vol. 12, No. 10).

Nanoparticles have been extensively investigated as an active cathode and anode in lithium-ion batteries -- common components of electronic devices -- because they can enhance the batteries' electrochemical properties.

To use colloidal nanoparticles for the electrodes, it had been necessary to combine them with carbon-based conductive materials for enhancing charge transport, as well as polymeric binders to stick the particles together and to the electrode substrate, Robinson said. This process added extra weight to the battery and made it difficult to model the movement of Li-ions and electrons through the mixture.

The critical processing technique Robinson and colleagues used was electrophoretic deposition, which binds the metal nanoparticles to the surface of the electrode substrate to each other in an assembly, creating strong electrical contacts between the particles and current collector.

The process results in a significant improvement in battery electrode assembly that cannot be replicated by conventional methods. Once attached, the particles are no longer soluble and are mechanically robust. In fact, this processing creates a film that has superior mechanical stability when compared to films fabricated by conventional battery-making methods with binders, Robinson said.

This research has led to the first cobalt-oxide nanoparticle-film battery electrode made without using binders and carbon black additives, and they show high gravimetric and volumetric capacities, even after 50 cycles.

The work was supported by the Energy Materials Center at Cornell funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Office of Basic Energy Science; the Cornell Center for Materials Research with funding from the National Science Foundation; and by the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology center at Cornell.

Alienware M18x R2 Gaming Laptop: Dual GPUs Attack - HotHardware

Calling the Alienware M18x R2 a laptop is like referring to a Harley Davidson as a bicycle. Both have handlebars and ride on two wheels, but when the rubber hits the road, the Harley's going to leave?a Schwinn in the rear-view mirror. So it goes with the Alienware system we abducted from Dell. Technically, it's a gaming laptop, but more accurately, it's one hell of a desktop replacement that leaves lesser systems in the dust.

Large and in charge, the 2012 model M18x retains the same spacious 18.4-inch LCD panel from last year. The display features a Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) screen resolution, which is nothing to write home about compared to the Retina Display?Apple's been putting in its latest?MacBook Pro systems, but underneath the hood it's an entirely different ballgame. Now sporting Ivy Bridge hardware, the system Alienware sent us came equipped with an Intel Core i7 3820QM processor clocked at 2.7GHz (up to 3.7GHz via Turbo) and two Kepler-based NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M graphics cards in SLI. It's a potent one-two combo made all the more powerful by a pair of Samsung PM830 256GB SATA 6Gbps solid state drives (SSDs) in RAID 0 and 16GB of fast DDR3-1600 memory.

This isn't a system designed for boardroom meetings or jaunts to the local Starbucks, not unless one or the other is hosting a LAN party. At right around 12 pounds, portability is sacrificed to the gaming gods in exchange for pure pixel pushing power, with a price tag that reflects its beastly innards. As configured, the M18x runs in the neighborhood of $4,400, though cost of admission into this elite club starts at $2,000. Either way, it's an expensive proposition by today's standards.

Is it worth the coin? Whether you're genuinely interested in learning the answer to that question or simply want to lust over an audacious luxury in the land of mobile, keep clicking, we have plenty to show you.

Processor Intel Core i7 3820QM processor (2.7GHz to 3.7GHz, 8MB cache)
Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Chipset Intel HM77 Express Chipset

Weight 11.93 pounds
Manufacturer Warranty 1-year in-home
Pricing: $4,379 (as configured)

There isn't much Alienware neglected to include in the M18x we received. If forced to nitpick, a Blu-ray burner (as opposed to a reader) and large mechanical hard drive for storage chores would have rounded out an otherwise obscene spec sheet. And by the way, both of those items can be configured into the build.
One thing we should note is that Alienware is no longer offering the Intel Core i7 3820QM processor. Since receiving this system, that option has been bumped up to a Core i7 3840QM, also a quad-core part with 8MB of cache but clocked 100MHz faster at 2.8GHz to 3.8GHz (Turbo).

Homes in Japan ? Real Estate Japan | Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya ...

Homes in Japan broadly follow two set patterns, or styles of residence, the multi-unit apartment complex and the single-unit detached family house. Apartment complexes are more commonly known as mansions, especially in their higher-end incarnation, while lower-end apartments are designed to accommodate families, couples and those on a budget.

Detached housing is a mix of the very new and the very old (in Japan terms). Many of the freestanding housing structures that you see in the big cities are left over from the country`s post-war construction boom, coming in either wooden or concrete forms. Newer housing units make use of more modern materials, though, and are sold often in a standard design set (especially if buying from a company).

One thing that often strikes new residents of Japan who follow the housing market is that Japanese homes are often designed with a lifespan of only a few decades. There are both regulatory (for example earthquake protection) and local socio-economic reasons for this but generally speaking, it is unlikely that a mansion building will remain for 40 years without some form of redevelopment taking place.

Japan Home streets

Housing in Japan is standardized around a format that lists the number of rooms in a unit in addition to the types of rooms available. As Japanese tradition has often had people sharing a mixed-use living room for cooking, socialising and sleeping, housing does not always include the same set of rooms often found in European or North American homes. Expect to find rooms designated as 2LDK or 1DK (indicated no. of rooms and living, dining and kitchen etc).

This standardization is one search feature that is available in the realestate.co.jp home search. Some homes do offer a way around this as they use the light wooden sliding doors of Japanese tradition and these can also be opened or set in such a way as to extend or reduce a room in size.

Where the home search on realestate.co.jp does differ from standard Japanese definitions is in giving apartment spaces in terms of squared meters as opposed to the often more common locally tatami mat size. This is a measurement that is set to the number of tatami mats that make up the floor space. Square meter sizes are also given, but on this site you will find them as the primary room search tool.

All agents that list their property on the realestate.co.jp site specifically work with foreign residents and are used to dealing with both long-term and short-term renters and buyers. Their information and listings are submitted using a standard formula which ensures that the housing data displayed on the site is accurate and up-to-date as well as being easily usable by yourself through the filter, search and insider guide tools.

MTB DVD sequel hits Sydney shores | infonews.co.nz New ...

A DVD promoting mountain biking in the Central North Island has only been in the Australian market a month, but it is already receiving rave reviews and prompting Australians to plan trips across the ditch.
"Mad If You Don't" is a 50 minute DVD that is included free with last month's edition of Australian Mountain Bike Magazine which has a circulation of 75,000. It follows the release of the popular "Be Rude Not To" DVD last year, and this time features the new Motu, Thermal and Taupo cycle trails, along with some of Rotorua's best mountain bike trails.

The DVD was a Rotorua International Airport initiative in conjunction with a number of other partners including the Department of Conservation, Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing, Events and Venues Rotorua, Tourism Eastland, Great Lake Taup?, Ride Rotorua, Rotorua District Council, Tourism New Zealand, Cycle Sport NZ, Trek Bicycles.

Airport chief executive George White says mountain biking is a valuable tourist attraction for Rotorua and the wider Central North Island region, noticeable year round with Australians using the direct flights between Sydney and Rotorua.

"Rotorua and the Central North Island region has a reputation as a cycling mecca. This area is renowned for its high quality mountain biking and road cycling opportunities and it has this reputation not just in New Zealand, but around the world - and we're lucky enough to have it right on our doorstep.

"In Rotorua alone, recreational mountain biking is now worth more than $10.2 million - nearly double the income of local exports. A recent study indicates this worth will only increase with the launch of new trails and initiatives such as the national Cycle Trails and other promotions."

He says this economic benefit made developing the DVD a win-win situation.

Mountain bikers have already posted positive comments about the DVD on the magazine's Facebook page.

"I just watched the latest DVD from your mag and it was....sweet. Those trials are....awesome."

"What a brilliant issue! The DVD was fantastic and has me planning my first trip to NZ."

"I've been watching your NZ DVD all weekend - LOVE IT. I would definitely be double figures from Start to Finish plus all the times I've just had it on whilst getting ready to ride."

"Just picked up the mag from the newsagent, now back in the office I've watched the DVD trailer & just went from six to midnight ... my mate & I have been talking about riding NZ recently, but this DVD has sealed the deal - talk is no more, we are going!"

Mr White says the airport experienced increased traffic following the release of last year's DVD, and he expects the region to see a similar response this time.

Given the success of the two MTD DVDs, work is now starting on a new production promoting the walking trails of Rotorua and the wider Central North Island region.

Trick or Treat: Video game classics for Halloween | SciTech | GMA ...

All Hallow?s Eve: the day when kids and adults alike can dress up as monsters, celebrities, or just about any character from popculture fandom. As an annual event, this occasion is a rare moment to witness creepy or spectacular things.?

?

It?s also an opportunity to scare yourself witless, and there are a couple of good games out there to consider playing for your fright fest inclinations. There are some really creepy titles out there that get the job done of sending jolts down your spine, but here?s a worthy list of horror-themed game franchises that I?ve encountered through the years that will hopefully give you more tricks and treats to consider for Halloween.?

?

Resident Evil

?

?

The progenitor of ??Survival Horror? as we know it and known as BioHazard in Japan, Capcom?s ?Resident Evil? franchise began under the direction of Shinji Mikami, releasing the game on an unsuspecting gaming populace during the early years of the original Sony Playstation. Its isolated mansion setting ?is very Alone in the Dark inspired, coupled with the tension and horror of facing zombies and other monstrosities with limited ammo forced gamers to reconsider their options in fighting threats head-on. A B-Movie plot loomed over solving numerous puzzles to progress through the plot, but it?s George A. Romero inspired setup made the game a runaway success, inspiring numerous sequels and spin-offs that carry on to this day. A film franchise by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich is loosely based on the games, with the latest one ?Resident Evil: Retribution? seeing release this past September.

?

?

Silent Hill

?

?

Following the success and release of Resident Evil, other video game companies tried to break into the ?Survival Horror? genre, with Konami being successful in their attempt. Released in 1999 for the Playstation, ?Silent Hill? proved to be more than just a Resident Evil clone, and proved without a shadow of a doubt that it was more terrifying than Capcom?s own monster franchise. Set in a fictional midwestern town that gives the game its title, themes of psychological horror and cult worship were adapted into the plot, circling around a man trying to find his daughter in a seemingly haunted ghost town. Multiple endings and a score composed by one Akira Yamaoka certified Silent Hill as another horrific classic, and that in turn warranted more sequels, which were subsequently released for later console generations. Recent installments did not fair well as of late, but Konami?s horror franchise has spawned two film adaptations, with the latest one being released this year ? ?Silent Hill: Revelation 3D?.

?

?

Castlevania

?

?

Anyone who?s grown up with a NES by their side knows Castlevania, and Konami?s vampire hunting franchise has seen the light of day on several occasions thanks to different innovations over the years. Starting out with a classic tale of good vs evil that drives a stake through the hearts of nostalgic gamers everywhere, most Castlevania games see the player controlling a vampire hunter traversing through Dracula?s Castle to get to the Lord of Darkness himself and banish him back to the gates of hell. Subsequent installments see changes in the formula, with one renowned entry being the PS1 classic ?Castlevania: Symphony of the Night?. Utilizing action RPG elements and placing players in the role of Dracula?s son Alucard, it was an instantaneous hit the put the franchise back on the map. Later installments in different platforms met similar success, and a recent 3D entry in the form of 2010?s ?Castlevania: Lords of Shadow? saw a new turn for the new generation of console platforming. A sequel, Lords of Shadow 2, is currently in development and awaiting release.

Dead Space

?

?

If Resident Evil 4 redefined the franchise by replacing Survival Horror with Survival Action, the Dead Space franchise trumps that call by placing the fear back with the same manner of gameplay in the scariest setting ever ? deep cold space. First released in 2008 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Windows, players take control of an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who joins a rescue team responding to a distress call from the interstellar mining ship called the U.S.S Ishimura. Taking a page from the Alien film franchise and Event Horizon, what Isaac finds there is more dead than alive, as dead bodies are resurrected as monstrous creatures called Necromorphs by a powerful artifact known as ?The Marker?. The game was a runaway success, and spawned spin-off animated movies and a 2011 sequel in the form of Dead Space 2. The third installment, Dead Space 3, is expected to be released this coming February.

Doom

?

?

A shooter that helped redefine the first-person shooting genre when it was released back in 1993, id Software?s Doom is a monster hit that?s seen several rereleases and sequels over the years. Focusing on a fictional character popularly known as ?Doomguy?, this science-fiction horror game has the protagonist battling the demons of hell while trying to survive and escape from a military base on Mars alive. ?It?s a genuine classic, and the game even saw a sequel/ remake of sorts in the form of Doom III in 2004, which is a retelling of the original game?s story with better visuals and graphics for the new age. That game recently saw a rerelease this month with Doom III: BFG for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. A movie adaptation was released in 2005, starring Karl Urban and Dwayne ?The Rock? Johnson in it. A new game sequel, Doom 4, is currently in production

?

?

Parasite Eve

?

?

If Horror, action, and RPG combined to form a winning combination, then Square-Enix?s Parasite Eve probably comes out as a grand example of that formula and beyond. Originally released for the Playstation on March 1998, this unique hybrid of a game had a lovely protagonist in the form of Aya Brea, who battled monstrosities born of the power of Mitochondria. The primary antagonist, Eve, served to mature and deliver more mayhem that required Aya to upgrade and unlock abilities necessary to combat the various monstrosities and beings unleashed by her nemesis. The series spawned two more sequels; Parasite Eve II which abandons the active-time RPG formula and takes a more action game oriented approach ala Resident Evil, and a spin-off title called The 3rd Birthday for the PSP that?s more cinematic and shooter oriented.

Fatal Frame

?

?

Japanese horror has a place in video game fandom, and Fatal Frame proves that the formula is not all about guns and action to make a video game really scary. Known originally as Zero in Japan, the franchise deals with players as they traverse through haunted locations to solve mysteries and search for missing loved ones, all the while facing ghosts and ?defeating them? by taking photographs with a camera. The first game was released for the PS2, with a port later coming to the Xbox with enhanced visuals and gameplay features. Subsequent installments also saw release for the Wii and Nintendo 3DS, adding a layer of horror that required more bravery and interaction that spelled more frightening encounters with the paranormal.

The Dangers Of Lung Cancer

by admin on October 29, 2012

Lung cancer is the second most common form of cancer in the UK; breast cancer is more common, but lung cancer is by far the most common cancer in men. Whilst every form of cancer deserves research and increasing developments in treatment, lung cancer often gets pushed aside due to its relation to smoking, but this should not be the case.

Whilst numbers of smokers is slowly declining, there are many people who are trying to quit ? especially as a result of such campaigns as Stoptober brought about by the NHS and the government. This decline in smoker numbers is good news for everyone, but it is only the first step and may take a while to have the effects felt across the whole population.

Whether you smoke or not, it is still sensible to know some of the more common causes of lung cancer as it is so prolific. Most cases of lung cancer are caused by smoking ? figures vary from 50% to 90% ? so this in undeniable, but there are other factors too. One interesting statistic is that while the UK?s smoking population has halved over the last 50 years, the decline in lung cancer has not followed to the same extent; even when taking into account population growth. This shows that there are other factors which are causing the often deadly disease.

Arguably the second most common factor is that of asbestos exposure. When asbestos is breathed in it can take decades to cause adverse health effects. Asbestos fibres are incredibly small and often get through the lungs filtration system, which is where the lung cancer can come from, as well as other lung conditions such as asbestosis and mesothelioma. Sufferers of asbestos related lung cancer can sometimes claim compensation for the disease as the exposure is often work related. Companies such as Asbestos Advice Helpline are available to help people get the compensation they deserve.

Numerous chemicals have been proven to be a factor in the appearance of lung cancer, with one of the most common being radon. It can appear naturally in some stones, which can cause exposure in certain parts of the UK, the most common being the West Country and the Peak District. This usually is not enough to form lung cancer itself, but can exaggerate the effects of smoking.

Exhaust fumes from traffic have also been proven to increase the risks of contracting lung cancer, especially through long term exposure. The risk can be increased by up to 50% if someone is subjected to a lot of exhaust fumes on a frequent basis.

In addition to these factors, there are other things which can increase the danger; age, genetics, family history, diet and numerous other things can increase the risk by various degrees. These last factors are more related on chance, but the factors such as smoking, asbestos and other chemicals are things which people should be aware of and try to avoid.

Hands-On With Samsung?s ATIV S: A Windows Phone 8 Whopper That?s Got Galaxy SIII-Style

Photo 29-10-2012 18 47 00The Samsung ATIV S is a whopper of a Windows Phone. Indeed it looks like Samsung has repurposed the Samsung GSIII's generous form to accomodate Microsoft's latest WP8 OS. The phone is very thin and light which certainly helps keep the heft down, and it felt polished rather than plasticky. But if you're not a fan of reflective surfaces then its all-over glossy sheen might get tiresome/distracting.

Presidential Election: From net neutrality to piracy, the issues keeping Hollywood up at night

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - From the economic recovery to the war in Iraq, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have espoused starkly different world views during their battle for the presidency, but what's keeping Hollywood up at night are a series of legislative and legal battles that could determine the future of the entertainment business.

Less often articulated than their policy differences on geo-politics have been the candidates' views on net neutrality, media ownership rules and piracy. But these issues are enormously important to studios and broadcasters. Lobbyists and analysts say the difference between a Romney and Obama administration could be the deciding factor on whether or not Tinseltown gets its way over the next four years.

TheWrap breaks down the issues for you:

ARTS AND PUBLIC BROADCASTING FUNDING

Public support for the arts has been on a steady decline since hitting a peak of more than $170 million in 1992 under President George Bush, but that drop will likely accelerate dramatically under a Romney administration. Indeed, the two candidates running for president this year have sharply divergent visions for the role that government should play in sponsoring public broadcasting and public arts.

Romney has pledged to take a chainsaw to arts funding as part of a larger effort to reduce the deficit. Despite his public embrace of Big Bird, he has said that he will entirely eliminate support for the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities, as well as subsidies for PBS, saying it no longer makes sense for the United States to borrow money to support these programs. At other times, the Romney campaign has softened that rhetoric to say he would only reduce subsidies by 50 percent.

In contrast, President Obama has proposed a roughly $9 million hike in support for the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts in the upcoming budget. Yet the president has also endorsed belt-tightening when it comes to government art subsidies. Last year, the president slashed arts funding by more than 13 percent. When it comes to public television and radio, he has proposed keeping the budget for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting at $445 million.

"On the issues of public support for the arts, the difference is incredibly clear," said Narric Rome, senior director of federal affairs with the advocacy group Americans for the Arts. "On one hand, you have a Republican ticket that wants to eliminate or at the very least dramatically reduce the endowment, and you have a Democratic ticket with a healthy track record for making the arts a priority."

NET NEUTRALITY

The ability of internet service providers to charge for premium access or block certain sites could well be decided by the outcome of the election.

"Net neutrality has become a political football," Matt Wood, policy director for the public interest group Free Press, told TheWrap. "We often joke that it's a solution in search of a problem, but there's a wide chasm between the parties.

It will become a bigger issue as we see companies like AT&T push the boundaries of current regulations."

Under President Obama, the Federal Communications Commission has tried to crack down on companies that discriminate against online video or that bar apps that compete with their own services. FCC chief Julius Genachowski has introduced new regulations aimed at preventing this behavior, but telecommunications companies like Verizon have sued to overturn the rules. They could win by citing a 2010 federal court decision that found the commission lacked the authority to regulate the internet.

"If the court were to throw out the rules, a Romney FCC is unlikely to appeal such a decision or adapt new rules," Andrew Schwartzman, a communications attorney, told TheWrap. "If Obama wins, I would expect the FCC to do exactly that and get back to network neutrality one way or the other."

Indeed, should Romney prove victorious, look for the FCC to do a 180 degree flip with regard to its enforcement efforts. The Republican nominee and his party are fiercely opposed to government intervention when it comes to the internet, with Romney describing the president's net-neutrality push as a bone for special interests - one he doesn't want to throw.

MEDIA OWNERSHIP

Restrictions preventing media companies from owning both a newspaper and a television or radio station in the same market have slowly weakened under both Republicans and Democrats. At the FCC, Genachowski has been open to reviewing these so-called cross-ownership rules, although Democratic commissioners have opposed efforts to water them down.

If Romney wins, analysts and public interest groups tell TheWrap that the drumbeat for further deregulation will grow louder and the decades-old ban on local media monopolies could become a thing of the past.

"I think nobody is in favor of having fewer voices and not having a diversity of viewpoints," Wood said. "But if the rule changes, without widespread opposition from the Democratic Party, there will more bigger stations controlling media markets and journalism will suffer."

However, media companies argue that these rules are outdated and that they need greater flexibility to compete in an internet economy where new media rivals are not hindered by geography.

CABLE BLACKOUTS

Once the exclusive purview of the corporate boardroom, the often-heated negotiations between cable providers and broadcasters over retransmission consent fees have increasingly played out in the public eye. As cable subscribers from New York to Los Angeles know, when talks break down between the likes of DISH and AMC the result can be blocked signals that prevent viewers from watching programs like "Breaking Bad" or "Mad Men."

Congress and the FCC have resisted calls from cable companies to impose stricter guidelines for how these talks can take place, but if more blackouts pile up, the pressure to act may be too strong. That's something broadcasters desperately want to avoid. They believe the push for reform is just an excuse by cable and satellite companies to reduce or excise carriage fees, and that's a big source of cash for the TV industry.

They want to engineer a phony crisis rather than compete in the marketplace," Dennis Wharton, executive vice president of communications for the National Association of Broadcasters, told TheWrap. "This is an important source of revenue for broadcasters, and it's what allows them to support local news and sports programming and what keeps the Super Bowl on free TV."

PIRACY

Hollywood was caught napping earlier this year when two pieces of anti-piracy legislation went up in flames, casualties of a grass-roots campaign fostered by Facebook and Wikipedia. These internet giants claimed that the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) were too far-reaching and analogous to censorship.

For now, the movie business' main lobbying arm, The Motion Picture Association of America, says it has no plans to push for fresh bills, preferring instead to win over Silicon Valley players through persuasion, not legislation.

"We'll see how that plays out, but we recognize that there is a private sector role to be played, while also realizing that historically talks with interested parties have also been in concert with the government," said Michael O'Leary, the MPAA's senior executive vice president for global policy and external affairs. "There is no specific legislative initiatives on the Hill and we are much more clearly focused on working voluntarily with others, but the government will still have a role in promoting American industry around the world and opening up markets and ensuring they are not anti-competitive."

For now, the MPAA may be in a legislative holding pattern. But since many foreign markets like China have become increasingly important to studios' bottom lines while maintaining a flexible appreciation for copyright laws, patience is finite. Should the DVD business continue to flounder or domestic attendance swoon, piracy will no doubt be partly blamed and the cries for government intervention may become more pronounced.

For Obama, that could pose a problem. After all, both Hollywood and Silicon Valley remain major sources of fundraising for his campaign.

Romney may be harder to read. He has opposed SOPA, but he has also endorsed robust copyright regulations and some analysts predict that he will be less sympathetic to claims that new rules could cut down on freedom of expression than Obama.

"If there's another fight between Northern and Southern California over piracy, Southern California will be a lot happier with a Romney administration," Schwartzman predicts.

BROADBAND SPECTRUM

The rise of smartphones and other wireless devices is creating a spectrum crunch, and the big losers may be the broadcast industry. That's likely to be the case whether Democrats retain control of the White House or Republicans manage to wrest the presidency back into their corner.

However, the approach that the next Oval Office occupant takes could differ. Though both Romney and Obama would likely focus on spectrum auctions that would call on broadcasters to surrender some of their territory to wireless players like AT&T and Verizon, Obama's team would likely be more inclined to pair that with the development of new spectrum-sharing technologies.

If either side asks broadcasters to free up too much spectrum, there will be fierce blowback. There is a growing sense among broadcasters that they already gave at the office, having previously surrendered parts of their claims on broadband spectrum to meet rising demand. The NAB, broadcasters' main lobbying arm, supports a voluntary auction of spectrum, but is concerned that the process will favor telecommunications companies.

"We want to make sure that TV stations don't get hurt in the process of implementing legislation," Wharton said. "The ones that will close won't be the network affiliates, it will be truly independent stations - the religious and foreign-language channels providing free programming to local communities - and it will be in the name of giving spectrum to behemoths like Verizon and AT&T."

INDECENCY RULES

Policing on nudity and obscenity on the airwaves has ratcheted down dramatically from its Janet Jackson/nipplegate high during the George W. Bush years. The Obama administration has shown less enthusiasm for taking broadcasters to the mat over nudity or errant profanity, analysts say.

That could change if Romney is elected. In deference to religious conservatives who support him, Romney may make cleaning up television a priority.

"However unhappy the entertainment industry has been with the enforcement of indecency and pornography in this administration, I think we are likely to see much more aggressive enforcement under a Romney FCC," Schwartzman said.

Many indecency cases were placed on hold by the Obama White House pending the outcome of the Supreme Court's recent decision not to uphold stricter regulations that would have penalized networks for fleeting shots of flesh and swear words uttered at public events. Should control shift at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., some of those cases may move to the top of the stack.

Text Messaging Mobile Cell Phone SMS | TOP NEWS

Why is Text Messaging so popular asked a very nice old lady at the coffee shop the other day. One gentleman near her stated; ?You really wouldn?t understand unless you try it.? Well, that does make sense doesn?t it? In review of this conversation on text messaging which lasted a good hour, it seems that the consensus is that text messaging, sending a quick thought to someone, is actually closer to how people communicate than was previously thought. As a writer of screen plays amongst other things, I always found it fascinating how many lines were just:
?Yes?
?Yeah Right?
?Okay by me?
?Sounds good?
?No way?
?See you then?
?Running late again?
Since humans communicate like this most often, it seems that text messaging fits into a nice niche between phone calls and emails, as it fills in the gap. Now that more and more people are trying text messaging and really digging it, more folks are looking at ways to save money, such as unlimited text messaging services on their cell phone bills. This begs one to ask, how can the old telephone system survive and profit if everyone is switching to cell phones and text messaging? Will the old standard phone service be a thing of the past? Many folks now are opting for cell phone service and disconnecting their phone lines to their home to save on their phone bills. It makes sense doesn?t it. Save a hundred dollars a month by turning off the home phone service, because you have to have a cell phone anyway, why have two phones? Text messaging is the wave of the future, even grandma thinks so now.

(AP) ? Shawn Williams' criticism will be remembered as a challenge.

And No. 12 Georgia responded better than anyone could have expected.

Five days after Williams ripped his defensive teammates for playing too soft, the Bulldogs turned in their best performance of the season ? one that will go down in Florida-Georgia lore.

The Bulldogs stuffed the third-ranked Gators from every angle, forcing six turnovers in a 17-9 victory Saturday that left them on the cusp of the Southeastern Conference championship game.

Call it the World's Largest Outdoor Turnover Party, and it gave Georgia consecutive wins in the heated rivalry for the first time since 1989. These have to be two of the more significant victories of coach Mark Richt's tenure.

"I'd say we're not soft," Richt said. "The defense rose to the occasion. ... Our seniors played well, and I know it's a game they'll remember for the rest of their lives."

The victory, just the fifth in the last 23 meetings for Georgia, gave them a chance for even bigger accomplishments.

The Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1 SEC) can clinch the East and a spot in the conference title game with wins against Mississippi and Auburn the next two weeks.

If Georgia plays defense like it did against Florida ? it was the first time since 1988 that UGA held the Gators without a touchdown ? getting to Atlanta should be a mere formality.

"Shawn challenged us and we took it personal," Jarvis Jones said. "As men, when another man challenges you, it will be personal. The guys stepped up to the challenge."

The Bulldogs did little on offense until Aaron Murray found Malcolm Mitchell for a 45-yard touchdown with 7:11 remaining that put them ahead 17-9. Mitchell spun out of Loucheiz Purifoy's tackle attempt and went mostly untouched the rest of the way. Florida kept the drive alive with Dominique Easley's holding penalty on third down.

Georgia sealed it with ? what else? ? a defensive play.

Jones knocked the ball out of Jordan Reed's hands at the 5-yard line, and teammate Sanders Commings recovered in the end zone with 2:05 left.

"When I saw him make the first guy miss, I thought he was going to score," Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel said. "He didn't take care of the ball, just like the whole team didn't all night."

Jones had another huge game against Florida (7-1, 6-1). The junior, who had four sacks in last year's 24-20 victory, finished with 13 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles.

"I had a great game, but it's about what we did as a defense," Jones said. "All of us did what we came here to do. ... It's a great feeling."

Williams' harsh words didn't go over well with coaches and teammates. He probably had a point after Georgia allowed at least 20 points in six of its first seven games and gave up 206 yards rushing last week at Kentucky.

Jones missed that game with a sprained ankle. With him back, Georgia looked like a different defense, and it surely helped that Florida self-destructed at every turn.

The Gators got behind early. Driskel fumbled twice on Florida's first three plays. Georgia recovered the second one, which set up Todd Gurley's 10-yard touchdown run.

Driskel, who completed 14 of 26 passes for 185 yards, lost another fumble, threw two interceptions and was sacked five times.

His first interception came at the end of the first half and with the Gators at the 5-yard line. Driskel rolled right on second down and threw across his body and into the end zone. Bacarri Rambo picked off the pass.

Driskel's next drive ended the same way. Under heavy pressure, he floated one over the middle that Damian Swann intercepted. It set up a Georgia field goal that made it 10-6.

Wildcat quarterback Trey Burton fumble on the ensuing possession, but Marshall Morgan missed a 37-yard attempt.

"We're capable of playing like this week in and week out," Jones said. "We should have been playing like this all year."

When the game was over, Richt and his players celebrated in every corner of EverBank Field.

"I wanted to stick around and enjoy it," Richt said. "I wanted our players to enjoy it. When you have a game like that and you have the type of success we had, you want to celebrate. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. We definitely weren't trying to taunt anyone. We were just trying to celebrate with our fans."

Georgia had plenty of anxious moments before the party started.

The Gators intercepted three passes from Murray, who completed 12 of 24 passes for 150 yards, but managed just two field goals off those turnovers. Georgia also was flagged 14 times for 132 yards.

Florida made it 10-9 on Caleb Sturgis' 50-yard field goal in the fourth, but Driskel's mistakes proved to be too much to overcome.

The Gators, who turned the ball over just four times in their first seven games, had four in the first 36 minutes Saturday.

And with Mike Gillislee (77 yards) mostly bottled up, the Gators had no choice but to put the ball in Driskel's hands.

"Six turnovers. Wow," Florida coach Will Muschamp said. "That's tough to overcome. We've got to find better ways to run the football, which we did in seven of eight games this year."

Muschamp noted all season how small his team's margin for error was. It really showed as the Gators got behind early and failed to make a comeback. The Gators had been 3-0 when trailing at halftime, but they didn't make the same successful halftime adjustments that carried them in wins against Texas A&M, Tennessee and LSU.

Georgia did.

"I think our guys were very serious about playing with intensity," Richt said. "They played with physicality. They were accused of some things that guys don't like to be accused of, and that probably helped motivate them."
